Smooth pick-up and drop-off as far as the company staff goes. Customer service was top notch. It helps that PHX is one of the better if not best organized and easy to navigate airport in the country. The car was in tip top shape and clean, no smells. My VW Jetta kept rebooting the dashboard control panel at random for some reason ("Welcome to VW..."), which was kind of annoying when I needed the navigation. Otherwise this was an excellent experience.

National car rental at PHX Sky Harbor Intl airport is the worst car rental experience ever. I'm never renting from National again--from any location. Firstly, the gate guy tells me the nearest fueling station is 15 minutes away--I ask because I want to refill my fuel since I know I'm not going far. But then he tells me I can prepay fuel at $3.69/gal but only pay for the fuel I use --which was not correct information. I drove the car a grand total of 25 miles. I return the car less than 24 hours later--I was in town for a meeting. When I arrive early to return the car (1.5 hrs earlier), the check-in guys are looking over the body of the car with a frickin' magnifying glass. I ask why they are analyzing the hood of the car- he tells me there a raised indentation that could only have happened from underneath the hood. WTH?! The car is light grey, and the rental garage has low lighting. Why didn't these people notice it before? Because it did not happen on my watch and now these guys are trying to pin it on me. It's absolutely ridiculous. I'm renting from any car company except National. Never again will I use National.

I/We are long time National Car renters. Always enjoy the service, efficiency and quality of cars rented, along with friendliness of employees. Phoenix Airport. On our last rental we chose a 2025 Malibu, green, great car, ran well great gas milage. When we picked it up, we were told to inspect the exterior well, so we did, but the lighting was poor, very dark. We drove the car, when we returned the car 4 days later, we pulled in, did not smug the car or dent it. The national people inspected the car under an intense light and found a smug on the right front facia. The inspector indicated they would be submitting a claim against our insurance company. The following day, November 18, 2025, received an e-mail from "Damage Recovery Unit" indicating I should contact my insurance company. They also indicated that I should receive a cost estimate in a day or so, it has now been 5 days. I spoke with both Ceclia and Mejeh, two nice ladies regarding this incident. As of today, 11/21/2025, I have not heard from National, I am willing to pay for the damage. Just need the charge. Also, I recommend for future business, that if National insists that customers inspect vehicles, the customer inspection area is light (the area was very dark) to the same level as the return car inspection area was very bright, so everything is equal. The different lighting levels appear to bias the return area. Also, this rental occurred at the Phoenix Airport.

I have been a valued customer of National for years and hold an “executive elite” status. I currently have a reservation at the Phoenix Sky Harbor location. This location has gotten better over the last few months and my experience with the selection and quality of the vehicles have improved tremendously. This last visit took me back, I was greeted upon arrival and I asked Tony if he could help me upgrade my current reservation. He stated that there was availability but that he would need to charge me an additional $20 per day. I explained that I had just booked a reservation 10/20-10/24 and this was not the case so I asked had the policy for my status tier on free upgrades changed. He said no but since I am keeping it until Friday the additional daily charge would apply. He then asked for my credit card and drivers license ( I thought this was asked before you exit but I guess my ethnic demographic may have warranted a more thorough review) I have never been treated like this at this location or any location. After leaving with my rental I contacted customer service to ask about the additional charge, and was assured that I should not have been charged this additional amount and that a manager would make the adjustment upon my return of the vehicle. I am disappointed in the inconsistency of your location and most of all at how I was treated, I felt like I was profiled. I really hope this is not trending behavior/experience for this location I had just started to see a positive change.

In truth most of my experience with National has been very good. The folks I interact with are pleasant, the process is easy, the cars are fine. Often the windows are not particularly clean which tends to be a consistent issue. My biggest issue was when my husband accidentally left a fanny pack on the floor of the passenger seat. It contained prescription sunglasses, many charging cords, a medical device and a few minor other items. It's big enough not to have been missed if the car got cleaned, which I'm assuming you do and I'm on record for having rented it making it very easy to identify who the item belonged to. BUT it apparently completely disappeared into this air. There is no way to submit a lost and found form to Eugene Airport, it's not listed so I was told to submit to Seattle. We tried countless times to speak to someone, your customer service is an endless loop of pointless robots. It was very frustrating and still, we never got our item back. Yes, of course, he shouldn't have forgotten it but this can't be the first nor the last time this will happen. National is a big enough company, you should be able to figure out a better process.
