There is no excuse for what I did but if you need an IID avoid Intoxalock and Auto Trim if you can! I am sure we are all glad this is getting out of my car. It was nothing but a hassle and I had to get at least six calibrations. They're $70 to Intoxalock and $30 to Auto Trim EVERY time. The first one, an employee at Auto Trim told me REMOVE the device every night so it won't freeze, which made sense to me. It violated and Intoxalock told me I was NOT supposed to remove the device at all. The unit itself was so old it had to have the same plastic and technology as the Apple IIe. Twice I was driving to/from Anchorage and it violated out of nowhere. Even if you move the device wrong picking it up to do a test it can fail and violate you. There HAS TO be a better way! Tommy at Auto Trim was very rude when I called about the removal process. He refused to provide any information at all and kept repeating Intoxalock has to contact them. Which I assumed but I wanted more information like cost, removal duration, etc I had to call Intoxalock and submit my completion period verification three times. (a State DL with no IID restriction) The removal is taking from 7:45 AM to "a couple more hours", according to Russell at Auto Trim, it is 2:30 PM and they close at five. Bryant at Auto Trim told me it would be about 300 bucks to remove it. I was told at the beginning it was $600 to install in a Chrysler 300 and $200 max to remove it. The only good thing about me getting away from all this is it ended up being $150.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intoxalock Ignition Interlock

How does an interlock device work?

An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small breathalyzer installed in your vehicle to prevent it from starting if alcohol is detected on your breath. Before driving, you'll blow into the device. If your breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) is below the programmed limit, the car starts. Periodic retests occur during your trip to ensure continued compliance. What is the cost of an ignition interlock device?

The installation of an ignition interlock device, often called a car breathalyzer, typically costs between $70 and $150. This one-time fee is paid at the start of your lease and covers the service center's labor to install the device in your vehicle. Payment is made directly to the service center at the time of installation. For more on cost breakdowns, you can read our cost of ignition interlock device guide.
