One of our boys has adhd, and both are energetic, happy kids who get excited, giggle, and whisper about their favorite scenes. We always sit in the back row out of respect for others, understanding that kids might get a little animated during a long movie. Today, however, we were told by a staff member that they “get complaints about us every week” and that “people have even stopped coming because of us.” I stepped out with the only other 2 in the back row with us (an elderly lady and young girl about our boys age) to apologize if we were loud or disruptive, she was shocked and denied having any concern with us stating she never heard our boys. Really, Marcus Theatres? That’s not only hard to believe but incredibly disheartening to hear. We’re talking about paid family movie experiences — and two 8-year-olds quietly sharing joy over their favorite story. Movies should be a place where kids can experience the magic of storytelling, not where parents feel shamed for bringing them. Please do better to create an inclusive, family-friendly environment where children — neurodivergent or not — can enjoy a movie without being made to feel unwelcome. Let kids be kids.
