The important part is, the dance was executed and everyone gave us so much praise.
***Disclaimer, we did wait until June to start this choreography with Hazel, and our wedding was in October. But this would’ve been more than enough time. I messaged Hazel that we’d like to go with her and work on our wedding dance and she agreed that she would help us and message us after her vacation, but then weeks went by so that put us behind to begin with. I had to reach back out and figure out the schedule to even start this***
I’d like to thank Hazel for what she did for us and how she was able to choreograph our dance. The experience brought me and my wife closer than I ever could imagine. The studio is decent, the atmosphere is inviting and the confidence is loud.
This isn’t really my complaint though. My complaint comes from more of a general sense that I feel hindered our ability to complete our project together and be on the same page so I think it was appropriate to wait until after the wedding to write this review. A family member gifted us with a romantic package that consisted of a 1 hour private dance lesson, 2 complimentary tickets social dance and there was miscommunication on whether this was for our wedding dance or for just us. We made some arrangements and made sure to pay for the difference to start our wedding choreography.
Upon the first lesson , Hazel was very excited to meet us and learn about us which gave us a great feeling that we had never felt before when approaching our wedding date. But then with time, Hazel suddenly changed into an impatient person who was very harsh when it came to choreographing our dance. I have been in a couple of dance studios before and practiced many different styles and never had an instructor be as harsh as this. I understand and respect that she has been teaching for many years, so it should come as no surprise that even couples who may have had some experience before are always going to learn differently than others.
With this in mind, I will admit that we showed up only 1 time and was late by about a few minutes. No worries there. However, there were a couple of times Hazel was late, and then rushed us, and then made us finish with nearly 10 minutes left after we practiced. To me, if we pay for lessons, by all means, we should’ve gotten every minute of what we needed to practice. And with the constant pressure of her saying “well you should’ve done this months ago”, that does not give us confidence. That does NOT go over well and that does NOT make us feel ready. What makes us feel ready is understanding the time we have, realizing how fast we were adapting and moving on quickly and how much attention to detail we paid.
We had added some extra parts in the dance ourselves that gave it more flair and that didn’t take much effort. But with Hazel, she corrected us in a way that made us feel less motivated and more ready to just finish the session each time. We started around August and ended just 2 weeks before the wedding, with 5 sessions total and practicing at home/at the studio when space was permitted. The effort we gave seemed nearly overlooked and I just wish we had a different experience. Having an instructor make you feel they just want to get the dance over with and be done with you is NOT the experience we deserved at ALL. A note to Hazel is that we planned this for MONTHS. Beyond a years worth of work. This was supposed to be fun and entertaining. We did not deserve the treatment we got, but I guess it seems that being aggressive was necessary.
All of this to say, we appreciate the dance that Hazel helped us with. The dance was executed, the dress was not an issue and we were so glad to have had the extra touch in our wedding. We want to have another opportunity to dance together, but I think going with another studio would be best due our experience with Hazel. If we had known the experience we were going to have, we would have not paid for extra time.
