This was a convenient stop along the north shore highway. The history was much more interesting than I expected and I developed a newfound respect for the brave pioneers who came before us. I spent about 2 hours here, which was the ideal amount of time. The extra money to go up into the light house was worth it. The walk along the shore was peaceful and relaxing. It was also a great place for photos! Would definitely recommend!

Split Rock Lighthouse has an important place in Minnesota’s maritime history. It was built in 1910 on the rocky shore of Lake Superior to help ships navigate safely through the lake’s dangerous waters. The lighthouse was constructed after the Mataafa Storm of 1905, a powerful storm that damaged or destroyed many ships and highlighted the need for better navigation aids along the North Shore. The lighthouse used a large Fresnel lens to project a powerful beam of light visible for miles across the lake. Although it was decommissioned in 1969, the site has been preserved as a historic landmark and museum.

15 min down the road same views at Palisade head. I’d skip it next time tourist trap feel. Lighthouse is pretty from a distance not worth $15 per person to go maybe worth $5 for 30 steps it’s a small lighthouse. High up views many other places for free try Enger tower Duluth or Congdon park Duluth or a bluff hike.

I completed a motorcycle Lake Superior Circle Tour and camped here. It’s a very scenic and beautiful spot and a memorable stop along the journey. The only downside is that the lighthouse itself was under construction during my visit; otherwise, it would have been perfect.

They had a cute museum and for $15pp, we received a 15 minute tour. The lighthouse was on the small side and is currently under construction although we were able to go inside without any issues. We also were able to tour one of the old light keepers houses. We don't regret seeing it but we would have maybe skipped it had we known. We got spoiled when we saw St. Augustine's lighthouse so that might have something to do with it.
