1. Gia đình James J. Hill (1891 – 1921)
2. Tổng giáo phận Công giáo Saint Paul và Minneapolis (1925 – 1978)
3. 3. Giai đoạn Hội Lịch sử Minnesota (1978 – Nay)

I’m an architect and history nerd so take it all with a grain of salt…. Been to many historic gilded age houses before and while somewhat unusual, the Hill house did not fall short of the rest. I did feel like a lot of the house was roped / closed off, but still plenty to see. The historical society has done a great job putting up little info placards on walls, laying out artifacts, staging rooms, and displaying old family photos. One feels as if they’ve spent time with & gotten to know the Hill family. I also noticed that the house was very kid-friendly even though I didn’t have mine with me. I saw a few children carrying around a kind of scavenger hunt the guides had given them at the front desk, which seemed to keep them occupied and excited to move from room to room. From a design perspective, this house can feel a little imposing from the exterior and the interiors are rather dark, but it is still fascinating to appreciate the details up close and in person. They don’t build em like they used to that’s for sure. I bought the ticket in advance but wanted to wander on a “self guided” tour… multiple guides welcomed me to also pause with their group and listen to portions of the guided tour. They were knowledgeable and friendly (and there were a lot of them!) As you might expect with a 36k sqft house, prepare for plenty of steps. Cannot speak to parking situation as I was traveling via Uber but it seemed like street parking was plentiful.

Beautiful house and such nice tour guides. What I found amazing about this place is the basement was available to see and tour, not normal of old homes. I have seen alot of historical homes and this one was amazing. Would love to go back at Christmas.

We really enjoyed touring the James J. Hill house and learning so much about James and his wife Mary. The house has been restored as it appeared when they lived in it, and it is a truly beautiful building and quite forward-thinking and high-tech for its time. Our tour guide was interesting and informative and he spoke not only of the opulence in which the Hills lived, but the grueling behind-the-scenes work of the domestic staff that made it all possible. Following the tour we were welcome to revisit most of the house to get a closer look at the pictures, artifacts, and displays as well as take pictures I highly recommend the James J. Hill House.

Actually 4.5 star rating. This place is amazing. It's neat to see the inside of the mansion. Our tour guide knew everything about the house and the Hill family. It would have been nice to see some of the kid bedrooms too. We arrived as a walk-in and had to wait until noon for openings with a guide.
