I guess you have to be a local to understand that you check in at the top of the hill and tours are only giving ever 1 1/2 hours. There is no excuse for not putting this on your webpage nor having a better sign or at least putting it where people can read it. We got up early, drove all the way from Hutchinson with our kids, made it there 5 minutes before they opened only to wait, at the bottom of the hill. Sat there for half an hour wondering where everybody was. We went to Fort Snelling instead.

The guide gave a wonderful tour. She's a wealth of historical information about the location, the fur trade, pioneer life, Sibley and the history of the buildings. Fascinating to explore. The gardens are lovely. Ive enjoyed several of the great events at this site also.

While on tour, I was horrified by the way the tour guide discussed indigenous people. Our guide made no mention of Henry Sibley’s leadership in the Dakota War and his involvement in the unjust trials and execution of Dakota men in Mankato. The only mention of this war was information about how many white settlers died. She referred to mixed white and Native people as “half-breeds,” and said that settlers have a love/hate relationship with Indigenous people, specifically citing the “noble savage” trope as proof of a positive depiction of Native people in popular culture. Sibley was framed as a hero throughout the tour with no nuance whatsoever. The language used was absolutely inappropriate, and I would recommend that the site work to improve this aspect in the future.

Much more interesting than you would think.
