Great place!! Most important to me is safety and atmosphere for my daughter- (dance and technique is important as well but not number one to me) The staff takes student safety very seriously! Highly recommended.

Wouldn’t recommend, particularly for young children. Not a kind or welcoming atmosphere to say the least, unfortunately. Was asked what my 2 year olds “problem” was very aggressively, rolled eyes and shook head at, because she was crying (she was just trying to adjust to not having me with her). A couple of irritated comments were made very openly making it clear the owner didn’t want to be teaching the young 2-3 year old class. Despite me doing my best to remove her quietly when needed, my apologies were met with more rolled eyes and unprofessional demeanor.
After mentioning to a couple of friends in the area, I found out they had the same EXACT experience with other staff and other aged children, as well as them yelling at the kids. We won’t be returning. Too bad, as I was really hoping for a nice dance studio in the area.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spotlight Dance Academy
What are the best subjects to take for young students?
Ballet, known as the foundation of dance, develops posture, grace, and attention to detail. Combine this with tap, which develops rhythm and musicality, and you have a powerful beginning. This is why our Young Dancers Program classes consist of ballet, tap, and tumbling.
Do the students have a performance at the end of the season?
Yes! We have a community favorite Student Dance Showcase where students perform choreography in beautiful, professional costumes in front of their families at the Grand Haven High School Performing Arts Center. It is a true theatrical dance opportunity for the students.
My child is very serious about training for a possible career. What should they enroll in?
By contacting the office, we will, with the teacher’s input, suggest an accelerated training schedule. Ballet is the core of all serious dance, with additional subjects added to cross-train the student. The repetition of multiple weekly ballet classes is recommended to instill proper muscle conditioning and memory so that the beauty and artistry are fluid and second nature to the student.
How do I know if my child is placed in the correct level?
If at any time during our full season a level change is warranted, the teachers, in their professional capacity, will recognize this and initiate a change. Parents can rest assured that we monitor students’ progress on a weekly basis.
What’s the difference between a recreational and pre-professional studio?
There are numerous things that help to define the difference. SDA, as a pre-professional studio, is dedicated to the preservation of dance both from the historical perspective as well as from the artistic perspective of the professional world. As a pre-professional studio, we have specific policies to ensure that the students receive distraction-free training. The teachers are professional. Our building is state-of-the-art with large classrooms and includes floating floors with professional Marley flooring overlay to reduce slipping and injuries.
Do you offer private lessons?
If studio schedules and instructor time permit, we do offer private lessons. Please call SDA at 616-850-0060 for details.
What age of students do you teach?
We teach students from 3 years old through adult, accommodating all skill levels from beginner to advanced. For specific age and level details, please refer to the class offerings tab.
What are SDA's enrollment periods?
The studio provides three enrollment options: a full year session consisting of 36 weeks, 6-week sessions beginning in October, January, and April, and a comprehensive summer program running from June through August. Contact our office for information about enrolling at any time throughout the year.
How do I receive current or future studio schedules and studio information?
Contact our office to ensure you are added to our mailing list. All current information is also accessible through our website.
Do you have a lot of boys at your studio?
We maintain a strong representation of male students, with one or more typically present in any given class. We also provide all-boys classes featuring hip-hop and rhythm techniques. Male students of all ages appreciate the physical challenges of dance and the fitness benefits that come from regular classes.
What are the other benefits of dance?
Dance provides numerous benefits including enhanced confidence, self-esteem, logic, critical thinking, coordination, rhythm, public speaking skills, creativity, and academic performance. Dance training develops and strengthens multiple muscle groups while also improving the brain's capacity to focus and process information more efficiently through consistent practice. The structured classroom environment fosters positive discipline that extends beyond the studio. Commitment to dance as a constructive and creative pursuit builds lasting self-esteem in both children and adults. The effort invested in showcase choreography generates genuine pride and accomplishment for students.
Will I be the oldest one in the class?
Unless a class is age-specific, which applies only to the Young Dancers Program, most classes include students of varying ages. Even when age differences exist among students, our instructors establish an environment where everyone feels comfortable and welcome.
Can a beginning child take a trial lesson or observe before enrolling?
Our studio maintains high standards of excellence with a professional teaching staff, which makes us confident in the quality of each student's experience. We recommend enrollment during our seasonal periods. Parents are welcome to accompany their child to observe a class of interest.
My 9-year-old child isn't interested in ballet. What do you recommend?
For children who enjoy movement and have high energy levels, hip hop, jazz, and tap are excellent alternatives, as these styles are highly cardiovascular and engaging. Many students develop an interest in ballet later as they mature.
How do I know what dance genres to enroll in?
We recommend contacting our office directly. Our staff will assist you through the selection process, particularly if you are new to dance instruction.
