I went here for the first time yesterday to see The Mandalorian and Grogu in IMAX with my dad (I already saw it on May 21st at AMC Naperville in IMAX with my mom, and it’s a great movie). I haven’t been to a Cinemark in 15 years, as I’ve only been to the Louis Joliet and Bourbonnais ones.
Also, I’ve read that this theater has the best and biggest IMAX screen in the Chicago area, and boy were they right!
This IMAX, in auditorium 17, is at an incredible 50 by 70ft with a 1:43:1 aspect ratio, which is bigger than the IMAX near me at AMC Naperville, and they recently got the 15/70mm format last July.
Both the image and sound quality are top notch. Image is clear & sharp, dialogue is understandable, the music sounds incredible, and the IMAX formatted scenes (like the opening AT-AT scene) made us feel like we’re within the Star Wars universe. Some scenes were a little too loud, but even though I’m autistic, I didn’t mind that at all since I’ve been to loud concerts and saw lots of movies in theaters with no issues.
For the full experience, I highly recommend sitting in seats G15 & G16 (Dad and I sat in those seats); you’ll be smack dab in the middle of the screen while not being too close or too far from it, getting the immersive feeling IMAX offers.
Onto the theater itself: Cinemark Seven Bridges and IMAX is in Woodridge, which is about 30 minutes away from me. It opened on February 25, 2000, and despite its age, it REALLY holds up! The beautiful art deco architecture that they’ve had since grand opening doesn’t clash with the modern technology at all; the only thing they’ve changed since opening (besides the modern tech) is their carpeting, which was changed in at least the early 2010s, and also still holds up well.
The interior’s always clean, tidy, and well maintained, and even the arcade & restrooms are clean.
I like how there’s a separate lobby for IMAX, too.
After exploring the theater, we went in line for concessions. The line went by quick, and I ordered a large popcorn (which Dad & I shared) and two medium Cokes. I paid $23.55, which is actually a reasonable price! The popcorn is really buttery & delicious, and the Cokes were refreshing.
The staff are really friendly. From the box office guy to the concession ladies, they’re always there to help you and put a smile on your face. They’re also really chatty once you get to know them, as I talked to the concession ladies about this theater and how it was my first time here. They even didn’t mind the bag of M&Ms that Dad snuck in.
We tried to enter the IMAX auditorium early, but the staff was still cleaning it up. They told us to wait for 5 minutes, so we did at a comfortable bench in the IMAX lobby. Those 5 minutes passed by and we were free to go in and sit. Later, I praised those same people, who were waiting to clean, as we exited the theater after the credits.
Dad and I went to the 7pm IMAX showing, and the theater was close to half full mostly in the rows behind us; lots of adults and a couple of school aged children. A couple of the rows in front of us were taken, too, but they didn’t obscure the screen.
Everyone was quiet and courteous throughout the movie, which is a good sign that Cinemark Seven Bridges cares about their theater policies.
The seats in auditorium 17 are really nice black leather seats. They’re comfortable, don’t ache your back a lot, and recline a little bit.
Despite the complaints I’ve read about the ads, I really didn’t mind the 19 minutes of them because it was mostly Noovie videos; for reference, ads began at 6:46 and ended at 7:05, but the lights dimmed 5 minutes prior. I also didn’t mind the 17 minutes of previews, either (for reference, they began at 7:06 and ended at 7:23). The actual film began at 7:24pm right after the IMAX countdown, and ended at 9:36pm.
This is now my favorite IMAX theater; I LOVE the huge screen and quality. I highly recommend this theater for the IMAX gurus. I’ll definitely see more movies in IMAX here, even though I primarily go to Star Cinema Grill in Bolingbrook nowadays.
