I LOVE THIS THEATER BUT THE SEATS ARE EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE AND SAGGY AND TEMP CONTROLS ARE IN A STUPID SPOT WHERE I CONSTANTLY BUMP THEM AND NO YRAY TABLE TO SIT ITEMS ON. I would go here more if this wasn't an issue but my wife and I avid movie goer's will pick The North Grand To Theater over movies 12 specifically for the seating comfort. My recommendation is go watch a movie at North Grand AND OAY ATTENTION TO THE SEATING DURING A 2 HOUR PLUS MOVIE 🍿🎥 THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THEY HAVE THE BEST MOVIE THEATER SEATS COMPARED TO THE BUSTED UP UNCOMFORTABLE RECLINER CHAIRS IN MOVIES 12 THEATER. IM DURE MOST PEOPLE WILL AGREE. Oh and when I'm told a movie starts at 7pm but then I get to my seat early and then have to watch 35 minutes of ads before 2 hour plus movie is ridiculous and is the reason I just wait for it to come to streaming.

This theater has a new bad habit in the last year or two: they keep turning on the big lights way too early. Sometimes they’ll do this mid-credits, even though there are post-credit scenes and people still seated. But twice now they’ve turned on the big lights during the movie itself. The last time this happened was a full 15 minutes *before* the credits even started, during the climax of the movie. They turned on the big lights for a weirdly long time, making it so we couldn’t see the screen. It was a pretty packed theater, and everyone started standing up and looking around and talking, like, “Do we need to fix this? Why did they do this?” The lights did go back down after about a minute or two, but this disrupted the climax of the movie and we didn’t know what happened. Nobody apologized, no refunds were offered, etc. They just blinded out the screen for a while and didn’t acknowledge it or anything. It’s still the cleanest theater in Ames, but we’ve started driving down to Des Moines more often. After this last experience though, I might start going to Des Moines every time. Which is a huge bummer. But honestly, an extra 80 minutes of driving is still better than feeling like the staff is trying to kick you out before the movie is over. They really shouldn’t be turning on the big lights mid credits anyway, but they *especially* shouldn’t make you feel like they’re trying to rush you out when you’re in a full house and not even at the end of the movie. It’s already been necessary to go to Des Moines often anyway, because this Cinemark doesn’t play any indies or foreign features. Not even the bigger ones. It’s wild that the biggest theater in a large college town won’t show most of what’s out there, limiting themselves only to the biggest Blockbusters. There are at least four theaters in the Des Moines area you can count on to show those movies, including other Cinemarks, but again, that’s an extra 80 minutes of driving. Being able to at least see the movie you paid for is the bare minimum, and this theater hasn’t been pulling that off. I’ll update the review if I can go a few movies here without the big lights during the showtime. We’ll see.
