Since opening at Canalside, I (and my wife or my buddy and his wife) have had the good fortune to stop for a couple of nights while transiting to Florida. I think it has been 3 years now that Bierkeller at Canalside has been open. We primarily come for the beer, a good selection of German lagers, but also enjoy a decent meal and seating with seatbacks (we have elder needs!). The first year the bier was good to above average. But during our last 3 visits the bier has rocked. It is one of the few places that we visit that having only 4 or 5 biers on-tap is not a limiting selection because they are all so good and so fresh and eviscerating. Now, if you are a "hop head" then this may not be your cup of tea. But if you like your lagers and true to form Bavarian (or more precisely, Franconian) lagers. My biggest challenge at Bierkeller is choice. I want to drink them all! One afternoon I had to setaside just for drinking the excellent hefeweissen. It is difficult to find a good fresh hefe in the USA, so when found I tend to want to drown in them. Nonetheless, I have the same "issue" with the kellerbier and especially by favorite sytle, the rauchbier (smoke beer). On the subject of pretzels: it is very difficult to source a good beer pretzel in the USA, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, one not lathered in butter or oil, and very little salt. The USA for some reason favors heavily salted and greasy pretzels. The beauty of pretzels in Bavaria is they are light in salt, not covered in slime, crunchy exterior with a soft interior. High on our "needs" list is a proper cheese for the Bierkeller pretzels and dark breads: obatzda. It seems the American public has not taken to this Bavarian delicacy. But two German beer restaurants in Florida make their own, Mr. Dunderbak's Restaurant and Brewery in Tampa, FL and Hollerbach's German Restaurant & Deli in Sanford, FL. Maybe this can be added to the Bierkeller plan. We are looking forward to the new canning and bottling operation and hoping to cart some home. On Parking: drive towards the Bierkeller. Approaching the biergarten follow the sign by turning right, drive down to the end of the street and turn right and you will reach the parking garage. No charge. A short walk to the Bierkeller.

Whenever I have friends or family visiting from out of town I bring them to Bierkeller. The location, food and atmosphere are all great, but the biggest reason this is such a great place is the excellent beer. It is unique among craft breweries in the South, as far as I know, because all the beers are authentic German lagers brewed on-site and fresh from the tank to the tap. There's nothing else like it. The staple Keller Bier is one of the best you'll ever taste, and there are always seasonally-appropriate alternate options as well. The Pilsner, Kolsch, Rauchbier, are all superb. It's also family and dog friendly, with a large open space to enjoy the weather and scenery, and frequent special events like live music or craft markets. The only thing I can think of that would make it even better would be a brass band in residence.

I love this place. I’ve been a huge fan of their beer for quite a while, and I have enjoyed seeing them grow from only doing events and having a pick up night at another brewery to growing into their own space. Parking is easy, just follow the signs to the free parking garage. Thru have even reserved a spot in their staff lot for my in-laws who have mobility issues. Just sent them a message on Facebook and they said they would be happy to help us. I really like the remodeling they are doing, and even though I liked their food before, it’s definitely gotten even better. I can't wait for their canning operation to start, because I will always have bierkeller in my fridge. Favorite area brewery by far! I've introduced it to a number of out of town friends who keep asking me to bring some when I go visit, so I try and stop by to get a couple of bottle fills. Just waiting for their Rauchbier to brew. Prost!!

The place you want to be at. I can’t offer enough positivity in this review as I enjoy everything they have to offer. From the bier, the food, the service and atmosphere/ location- it simply doesn’t get better than this. As a music lover I can’t thank Scott enough for his support for the music community- he brings in so many talented artists from jazz, rock, holiday and my particular favorite- Oompah / Polka music. I’ve been following Scott and the Bierkeller since I first heard about his pop up near the canal walk. He’s come a long way and you too, should make the effort to stop by. You won’t regret it.
