  This was museum was cool, I’m giving it 4 stars because I would of appreciated it more sex education … I don’t know if that sounds silly but the random artifacts in my opinion were a bit boring I mostly enjoyed the games and photo ops. The staff was cool and friendly.

  What ever you are expecting, this ain't it. I was very disappointed in the entire experience. The staff was not helpful. The museum was barely informative and boring. The funland was also boring. The best part was the big boob inflatable area. Would not recommend. Would not go again.

  This museum is one of my favorite museums in NYC. I take friends there all the time and many insist on returning as they had such a good time. You'll illicit some interesting conversation with your friends as you ponder over the artifacts on display. You'll laugh together as you play the carnival games in Superfunland and you'll reflect upon your time here with a cocktail in the bar. Highly recommend a Facial before you leave!

  The Museum of Sex is curated in a way that makes sex a fetishitic practise that is completely a spectacle. I think the way it presents some of its collection is problematic: for one example, the set ups of the circuses- one in particular that was violent and sadistic in harming women’s bodies for spectators pleasure. Though admitting to the violence, it was explained that this was a spectacle that people were just interested in. The description speaks plainly, but set in a place that plays the tinkling fantastical tunes of the circus that is fun filled and light. Many other practises were shown in such a way. It felt disorienting as the museum makes it that you’re supposed to be enjoying the experience it provides, the objects it displays: and some are not that. I think a bit more sensitivity may be required for some of the pieces they display, or admitting to the gruesome history of the artefacts it holds and the harm done with some seriousness. You could look at some of these art objects/ artefacts with fun: and in fact, some of them are. I did enjoy some of this museum, but left with mixed feelings, more so on the unwell side. (E.g having a arcade machine of a machine female mermaid who’s purpose is to orgasm depending on your interaction with her is a kind of gray area, even if it can be fun to play an arcade game). Disclaimer: I am not against this museum’s existence nor do I think sex awareness etc and celebration of sex shouldn’t exist- they should! We live in a society that is ashamed of sex and a museum of sex should counteract and celebrate and make aware! Where this museum could be more educational, more aware of the deep history and trauma of some of their contents, this museum could’ve been a lot more radical (which, I think, it does try to set out to be, but ends up leaning more to provocation- which is a neutral space that can tip either to negative or positive sides). On another note, staff are kind and lovely

  I wanted to say this place was great, but I can't. There were some things that just was too cult centric. Yes, it shows you some tools they used back in the day that looked like torture devices, but then the next 2 floors are mostly about cult type stuff. Plus it only showed Caucasians as if there is no history on other ethnicities creating things. They could've shown the book of karma sutra or something else to really spice it up and make it not boring. Don't even get me started on how hot it is, so that by the time you get downstairs you will definitely buy a drink at the bar(where the only spot of air condition is). The Funland part was cute with the games and slide.
