Really nice place with cool exhibits, and they are always nice and helpful. I highly recommend taking the river trail to see the Redwood Ferry site where the battle took place. They will give you a trail map. It's a bit steep and rutted but I did the round trip plus spent time at the Ferry in less than an hour. There is a plaque near the river showing the site of the ferry.

I am a huge fan of Henry David Thoreau, and each year on his birthday I try to go to a place linked to him.The Lower Sioux Agency was the farthest west Thoreau ever got on his travels. This year (2018) I was working at a RV park just south of here , so on July 12th I drove up to check it out . A very informative tour guide, great museum and store inside. The grounds were well maintained with at lest one building still standing and in good shape that Thoreau spoke of and some huge old cottonwoods that might have been the shade trees he sat under While watching the treaty payments being made. My only regret is that I was unable to come back again latter in the season when the biting insects were fewer (if there is such a time in MN ).
It does seem a great shame that so many Sioux were hung after the uprising in 1862, when oath breaking traitors like Jeff Davis , R.E. Lee and others were let off .
