This is one of those incredibly interesting places for those who like to travel off the interstate. The Sioux quartzite is quite interesting, it is an approximately 1.6 billion year old sandstone which has been metamorphosed into a quartzite. For the budding geologist, the ripple marks and other sedimentary structures are visible. There is a tall-grass prairie for those interested in botany and prairie ecosystems. For those interested in Native American history, the petroglyphs are easy to see and accessible. The visitor center contains interesting narratives on the nearby flora and fauna as well as Minnesota's early inhabitants. The staff was interesting and provided a tour. There is a well stocked small bookstore and the usual gift shop.

Beautiful prairie and amazing collection of petroglyphs. We came out over MEA and while the parking lot was full, there was still a feeling of solitude while exploring the site. We explored inside and spoke with the history guides - then were able to take a guided tour of the rock face. I highly recommend the tour, we would have missed much of the story and pictographs without Chuck! And, make sure that everyone takes a turn with the atlatyl. It was a fantastic experience and the kids get a certificate if they are able to have the dart stick in the buffalo!
