Originally The New Theatre, it opened on Boxing Day, 1912. It went through several iterations, being renamed once before becoming the Opera House in 1920. It's also been used for different functions; as a cinema in WW2, then a bingo hall before reopening as a theatre again in 1984. Since, it has hosted magnificent shows like Barnum and Phantom of the Opera.

Very nervous to visit today on the hottest day of the year so far but very pleased that the theatre was cool and comfortable. Also laughed a lot at Something Rotten which is a very fun and well staged homage to musical theatre. I understand reviews have been mixed and the idea of a stand up comedian as a leading role haven't exactly gone over well but as a theatre fan it was truly a silly, over the top delight. Not a single person in the ensemble is a weak link and both myself and my partner were completely won over. I hope the show picks up steam with word of mouth because in the end we spent two and a half hours laughing our heads off.

Something Rotten at the Opera House Manchester. Booked tickets on special offer turned out to be on the hottest day of the year. No problem air conditioning on full.
Absolutely great musical the cast were so good and you could tell they were happy to be there. Didn't know what to expect but the one liners were delivered with expertise Jason Manford his usual funny self I would definitely recommend seeing it before it moves on

Makes you proud to come from Manchester. Saw Something Rotten starrin Jason Manford and many others. Fabulous comedy musical. Couple of tips dont turn up before 1900 as the doors are not open. Its a bit expensive having drinks etc delivered to your seat but worth it as avoids queues.

It was great to be back at the Opera house after many years. The staff are very helpful and friendly. Obviously, it is an old building so tight staircases are standard and the gents toilet in the circle was some sort of cupboard I think. It is on two levels with a small twisting staircase. The seats are reasonably comfortable but size is a problem. You don't have much legroom and the interval was very welcome to stretch my legs. However, the Midsomer Murders play was worth it. A fabulous production of the very first tv episode, Killings in Badgers Drift. I thought it might be off putting to see " Troy" playing Barnaby but it worked out OK. They added more humour and that made it easy to watch. The scene changes were excellent and done with some clever remote controls.
As always getting home through Manchester is a nightmare the taxi was showing as 1/4 of a mile as the crow flies but took 13 minutes to navigate his way to us. The Opera house is well worth it the bar staff friendly and if you arrive early there is no problem getting served. The upcoming shows look very interesting so make the effort you won't be disappointed. Recommended.
