This review is for the show "Rent" 2026.10.10. Lovely experience! We laughed and cried. Really been touched by the performancers! They are the greatest! Recommend Recommend Recommend! Hope it can run longer!
RENT, the great and glorious musical by Jonathan Larsen, who famously died just before the first preview in 1996, celebrating the centenary of LA BOHEME, on which it riffs so well, at the Tom Stoppard Theatre, the Duke of York's as was.
I had not seen the show before, and had booked this big West End revival on the strength of the wonderful show THE JONATHAN LARSEN PROJECT at Southwark Playhouse a few months ago.
I was seriously underwhelmed. The great delicacy and humour, the light touch in so much of the music, the hardness and grittiness of the original, are all subsumed into a sleek-ified smooth-ified West End show of Big Numbers, and no delicacy or grittiness whatsoever.
This is about poverty and homelessness, the AIDS epidemic and friends dying, creativity and failure, forgodsake!
In the original production different names were used for AIDS victims at every performance. "Done because we are too many."
All the rough and ready New York Theater Workshop feel has been ironed out, the music amplified to an extreme, and the delicacy thrown out.
A genuine classic reworked to be a museum piece. Larsen deserves much better. **
Never sat on the stage before, only did it because it was the only tickets I could get. Ended up being pretty cool to be so close to the actors. During Rent, several actors would make eye contact and interact during big group scenes.

Fantastic experience. We saw Arcadia, great production, really enjoyed it. This is a smallish theatre and that allows for an intimate spectator experience anyway, but also we had on-stage seating, which was fantastic. I recommend it highly. Unless you're light sensitive. Unfortunately the stage lights were hurting my sister's eyes, and at interval we asked the staff if it was possible to borrow a hat of some kind. They were so helpful and pleasant, the person we spoke to asked a colleague, they chatted with their supervisor and, when no eye shade could be found, they reseated us in some really great seats and my sister was able to enjoy the rest of the play fully. General organisation and communication from the staff was also very good. All in all, brilliant play, excellent staff, beautiful theatre. Thank you.
