I’ve been disappointed by my recent experiences at the Newbies screenings at ODEON Maidstone.
I’ve attended newbies here twice with my baby, specifically because these screenings are advertised as a safe and comfortable environment for parents/carers with children under two. The entire purpose of these showings is to allow the parents to relax without worrying about breastfeeding, their babies crying, brighter lighting, or lower sound levels.
However, on both occasions at Maidstone Odeon there have been guests who have been let into these showings who were not parents of young children and did not have children under 2 with them. When I questioned this today to a host, I was told that the other guests (who were let into the screen) had been informed that it was a Newbies screening and asked whether they minded. What seems to have been overlooked is how the mothers and parents attending may feel. Many of us can only attend these specific screenings because they are designed around the needs of babies and new parents. Yet the other guests would’ve had the freedom to see a later showing as they didn’t have children with them.
Allowing general guests into these screenings changes the atmosphere entirely and can make parents feel uncomfortable or judged in a space that is specifically marketed as supportive and inclusive for them. The consideration should not only be whether standard guests mind the environment, but whether parents (who have bought their children) feel comfortable using the service they booked for. If you’re not going to follow the ‘rules’ which have been advertised for these screenings what is the point in even having them?
It’s a shame because these screenings are such a valuable idea, and I’ve not had any issue with this at other ODEON cinemas in Kent, but they need to be managed properly to preserve the safe and understanding environment they are intended to provide.

First time going to the cinema in over 10 years and I'm now hooked. I cannot wait to go back.
OMG the size of the large popcorn was enormous. The sharer combo for £17.99 was the perfect selection for us and Jesus christ the size of the drinks and the selection of drinks was just crazy.
100% spoilt for choice
Seats were comfortable, my friend treated me to recliner seats - perfect if you fidget
Staff were really friendly and accommodating
Only downside is if you have your hands full there should be buttons to open the doors to the theatre
