Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Square (formerly Coubertin Square)

Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Square right in the heart of the Olympic Park is a versatile location for a huge variety of different events. For instance in 2005 it became the venue for a most legendary Open Air concert with British superstars Coldplay performing in front of a enthusiastic crowd of 10.000. It also became a venue for annual public events like the Summer Night’s Dream or the Summer Festival, also for sports competitions such as the X-Games or MASH later on. Setting the stage for the FIFA fan festival or the Munich outdoorsportsfestival the spot proved to be an adaptable allrounder. In earlier days the whole area between the Olympic Stadium and the Olympic Swimming Hall was known as Coubertin Square. In July 2021 the main part at the western side of the square was renamed Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Square in order to honour Munich’s former Lord Mayor who had been one of the main promoters for the city’s bid to host the Olympic Summer Games in 1972. Due to his dedication and commitment Vogel is also called “Father of the Olympic Games in Munich.” After being head of the city for twelve years (1960 – 1972) Vogel later became Federal Minister in the West-German government, Lord Mayor in Berlin and head of the German Social Democratic Party. In July 2020 Hans-Jochen Vogel died at the age of 94 in Munich. Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Square is situated between the Olympic Stadium in the west, the Olympic Hall in the north, reaching its borders at Rudolf-Harbig-Weg in the south. The area east of the Olympic Hall heading towards the Olympic Swimming Pool is still called Coubertin Square.
