Both lacquers and enamels may contain color or pigment. Lacquers are thermoplastic, meaning they can be fully dissolved using their original solvent. They dry through solvent evaporation. Enamels, however, cannot be fully redissolved in their original solvent. While the solvent may lift or remove enamels, it leaves behind flakes and particles that remain undissolved. Enamels dry through solvent evaporation and then cure either by oxidation, where oxygen reacts with the polymer to create a new oxidized polymer, or by crosslinking with an additional polymer in the enamel. To illustrate the difference, consider scrambled eggs. If uncooked scrambled eggs dry completely through evaporation, you can reconstitute them by adding water. This dried egg film behaves like a lacquer. If you cook scrambled eggs, they will not redissolve in water. The egg proteins have undergone a chemical reaction, crosslinking to form a new polymer structure. This process is comparable to how an enamel cures.
