Hill & Smith Inc. headquartered in Columbus, Ohio was formed in 2008. The first of several planned American manufactured products at Hill & Smith Inc. was Zoneguard®, a portable steel barrier system capable of redirecting motor vehicles back to the roadway and thus protecting work zones and/or potential hazards from errant vehicles. While portable steel crash barriers had been used for decades throughout Europe, this innovative design was new to American highways. Zoneguard® underwent extensive crash testing to meet the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) 2009 requirements in the US and received Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) eligibility for use on the National Highway Systems.
