Smith Metal & Iron Co, nestled in the heart of Rock Hill, SC, is a haven for those in search of a reliable scrap metal dealer. With a sprawling yard filled with a diverse array of metal scraps, this establishment caters to both individual sellers and industrial clients alike. The clinking and clanking of metal pieces being sorted and processed create a rhythmic soundtrack that underscores the industrious nature of this operation.
It’s really cool and they price appliances and higher grade steel accordingly. I think I got about 8.5c/lb on a load of washers/dryers and over 10c/lb on a load of I-beams. I take a video of the big magnet every time I go, I just think it’s neat.

I had the misfortune of visiting Smith Metal & Iron Co. recently, and I can confidently say it was one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. The two workers there were incredibly rude and unprofessional. Instead of assisting me, they felt the need to make jokes about my appearance and suggest that I needed to work out. I found this not only disrespectful but also completely uncalled for—especially coming from individuals just scraping by in a job that seems less than glamorous.
To add to my frustration, the lady handling payouts was too busy scrolling on her phone to acknowledge my presence properly. It’s unprofessional to be glued to your device when you're supposed to be serving customers, and it showed in her inattentiveness.
As for the payout, I brought in 200 pounds of metal, and all I got in return was a measly $10. I know scrap prices fluctuate, but this felt like a slap in the face after the poor treatment I received.
All in all, I will not be returning to Smith Metal & Iron Co. I recommend looking elsewhere if you're in need of a scrap yard that values their customers and offers fair service.
Save yourself the hassle and the attitude—look for a place where you’re treated with respect.
