Because I cancelled a few days after the date required if I wanted a refund, I was asked for medical corroboration. I submitted two letters from my doctors, complying with all of their requests. I ended up being charged almost $500, after a week+ of back and forth with the booking at Tripadvisor. I believed at the time that it was Tripadvisor who made the final call, but it turns out that it was Hampton Inn/Hilton. I will be canceling my membership with Hilton Honors and will avoid their hotels in the future.
