I stayed here for one night on Friday Dec 26 for a daytrip to Matagorda Bay. This was my first time staying here, and I wanted to like the place, but it also fell short on fundamentals.
HILTON GOLD: This may not mean a lot since there was no courtesy room upgrade and I didn't need to do any early check-in or late check-out, but they asked if I wanted water or some snacks at time of check-in. The little things count.
PET POLICY: The whole reason why I chose this hotel, and not the dozen other choices that were cheaper, was they allowed pets with a $50 pet fee. I was happy to see that I wasn't the only dog owner; there were several other couples who brought their dogs. The hotel is very pet friendly, with a doggy poop station on the corner of the parking lot. I appreciate the fact that they allow pets, because that was the whole point of my trip was to take my dog on his first beach trip, so they deserve a bonus star for this.
Also, there's a hotel cat named Max. At first I thought he was a poor stray waiting to get in after a cold night out - but no - no, he has a full setup by the walkway to the pool. He has a cat bed, feeding station, everything. That entire door walkway to the pool is like his own personal catio.
LOCATION: This is located along a road with a string of other hotels in the same price range. There's a Walmart across the road, Vallarta Mexican restaurant right next door, and about 35 minutes to Matagorda Bay. It's about 5 min from 'main street' in Bay City, with more restaurant choices.
SUITE: I stayed in a 1-king suite and the room was not bad. The hotel is very modern, the room was clean and spacious. I liked how much room was in the suite with the kitchenette, the sitting area and desk, and lots of power plugs. Shower was very modern and new and walk-in with glass sliding panels.
However, there were several issues in the room ... body towels were threadbare. When I say threadbare, I mean all the plushness has been washed away, and the only things holding the towels together were tenacity and cheapness. It was so bad on one of the towels, you could literally see through the towel because it was so worn.
Hotel wifi doesn't work. You couldn't connect to HHonors, and given how much I needed to look up for restaurants for dinner, directions to the beach, etc. this was a major issue for me.
Bathroom sink was new, but they placed the faucet in the corner. I was scrubbing my hands and face in the corner of the sink, and the water splashed everywhere because the faucet was poorly placed.
Shower low water pressure (but I also stayed on the 4th floor). Water went from lukewarm to scalding hot ,and it took several minutes for the water to change temperature.
Linens, bed and pillows were comfortable and clean.
SERVICE: Pretty good. My only complaint is that when I was checking in (probably at around 6:00 PM), I had to stand for several minutes at the front counter. I thought maybe the receptionist was in the back, but she was sitting in the breakfast area reading or on the phone. Front desk could benefit from a bell.
The rest of the hotel experience is what you would expect from a Hampton Inn.
