Fantastic experience at the Double Barrel Steakhouse! We celebrated my husband’s 50th here, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the service, ambiance and food & drinks! Our server Kylee set the perfect tone for the entire meal.

I recently went to the Hobbit Dining experience that the Preserve Resort has on-site. In a vacuum, I had a nice experience. The grounds were beautiful, and EVERYONE I talked to during my experience was exceptionally polite and helpful. That being said, when considering that the event cost $1,600 for six people, it left a lot to be desired. There were a few things that legitimately bothered me, and several things that left me thinking "For what I just paid I would have hoped for something more."
When we arrived at the hobbit house (For us the Sunflower house) I was disappointed with how little furnishing / decoration there was outside. The hobbit door itself was very nice and looked great, but besides some chairs and a fire pit there were no other decorations outside. When we got inside I was also left feeling like they could have done a lot more. There was a large wooden bench and a nice fireplace. Besides some lit candles and previously used Maker's Mark bottles, there was really no other decorations or furnishing. Because it was described as a hobbit house this soured my experience. The only primary "hobbit" thing in this entire experience was the door to get in, which was well done. The only other "hobbit" related part of the event was music that they played from Lord of the Rings. It was quiet background music and was nice. What bothered me about it is that it was being played off of a boombox with flashing neon lights no more than three feet from where we were eating. I would have hoped that they had the music playing from speakers up in the ceiling, it felt tacky.
After looking at reviews other people have left for their hobbit house experience we definitely were given a hobbit house with much less outside decor. Its very disappointing that there is such a large variance on what the outside of the homes look like. There are some gorgeous pictures on google maps from other people's reviews, and we got a stone walkway with a fire pit and some wooden chairs.
When I sat down and saw the menu we were being served I was fairly annoyed, and this was the part of the experience that bothered me the most. I included pictures of the menu they advertised when I booked vs the menu that we were being served. There were several changes made, all I feel for the cheaper:
- A charcuturie board substituted for bread with everything bagel seasoning.
- Roasted pheasant in truffle oil for Pheasant pot pie.
- Honey lavender salmon for hot honey salmon. I was also disappointed with the cut of the salmon. It was no more than 2" wide.
After eating, we were asked if we wanted to go outside and make smores. It had rained at some point while we were eating, which the staff obviously has no control over. I was however, disappointed in how they handled it. At no point did they offer to try and wipe down the chairs or give us towels to sit on. This was the only poor interaction we had during the night, and because of it we ended out time there ~ 45 minutes early.
For the price point, I would absolutely not recommend this to anyone. For the $1,600 we spent you could put a nice down payment on a trip to New Zealand to see the actual site they filmed at.

My girlfriend and I stayed at The Preserve for our anniversary, and everything was absolutely perfect. The property is stunning, the staff was incredible, and dinner at Double Barrel was one of the best we’ve ever had. The highlight of the night was when the owner, Paul, personally came over to wish us a happy anniversary and surprised us with a bottle of champagne to celebrate. It couldn’t have been any better, truly a five-star experience from start to finish.

Last minute decision to come here with mom and her friend. We were pleasantly surprised with an upgrade due to construction at the original stay. Ended up staying at the Hilltop upper floor with three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a fire place with full kitchen. Amazing car service to and from the dining area too. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Since we only stayed one night, we didn’t get to enjoy it all, but what we experienced, were all amazing.

We visited The Preserve and our family had a wonderful time. Our kids especially loved the fly fishing experience and meeting the horses; they even learned how to groom them. Everyone we encountered was friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere was beautiful and relaxing.
A special shout-out to Paul Mihailides, the owner, who personally checked in with us at dinner and went out of his way to make our stay extra special. When he heard that my daughter had only caught one small fish during her fly-fishing session, he surprised her by scheduling another complimentary session the next day. That small act of kindness made her entire trip! She caught multiple larger fish the second day, and was so proud of herself.
Dinner was fantastic. Everything we ate was delicious, especially the strawberry shortcake for dessert which was absolutely amazing. We can’t wait to come back and create more memories here. I highly recommend The Preserve to any family looking for a mix of relaxation, great hospitality, outdoor adventure and fabulous food.
