First of all, I practically never write reviews, good or bad. Despite having pretty sophisticated sensibilities from a lot of travel around the world, as well as many years of experience working in service and hospitality roles throughout my life, I just don’t take the time for whatever reason. This time, however, I am compelled to take the time, having just had such a great experience. You ROCK, Annette!
So, it is therefore with such great pleasure that I gladly give 5 Stars to Tru Hotel in Merrillville. It was a “TRU”-ly fantastic experience in many ways, but perhaps most impressive of all (inspiring, even) was Annette, our TRU-ly delightful Breakfast Host during our 2 nights stay. We were astounded with her incredible warmth immediately upon greeting us, giving us huge hugs and sugary salutations each morning, both before and after our delicious breakfast. She gave inviting descriptions of the day’s food offerings, and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our meal. She engaged us casually but affectionately in conversation in such a genuine, authentic way that so clearly comes from her heart. She is truly one of a kind, as a person and as a Server, and puts it all out there for others.
And, not only did her amazing attitude and generous spirit lift our own spirits, it seemed to have an infectious effect upon everyone in the room, raising the overall breakfast-room vibe to Festive, Joyous, full of lively conversation and laughter. This isn’t very common in the typical hotel breakfast room, in my opinion, which can often be rather glum, drab, and even sort of somber–everyone MAYBE mumbling quietly with their heads and voices lowered, chowing down on the food, staring blankly at the TV, and then back up to the room with a yogurt and banana in their pocket, but without ever engaging anyone else…unless bumping into them by the waffle station or juice dispenser. What a pleasant and refreshing change of pace this was for us!
And, to be completely honest, I think we all can see how rarely we find TRU-ly EXCELLENT customer service and hospitality these post-Covid days, how rarely we encounter someone really, clearly STRIVING to go above and beyond with respect to genuine, enthusiastic, engaging hospitality. THANK YOU, Annette!!! Really inspiring :)
Other things were really nice as well, such as the overall cleanliness throughout the hotel, the kiosk with snacks and drinks in the lobby, the comfortable and modern amenities in the room, super awesome squishy pillows, and the soap/shampoo/lotion squeeze bottles (instead of packaged wastefully in paper and plastic and hardly used and thrown in the trash).
If there was one aspect of our stay that wasn’t the best, I’d say that a few staff members could “raise the bar” a bit and follow Annette’s excellent example. Don’t get me wrong, not everyone can be Annette…she is one of a kind, as I said. But one or two employees seemed less than enthusiastic to be working in a customer service role, at least when we encountered them. We all have our days, of course. But, the front desk person seemed sort of bothered by our presence, inconvenienced by questions, and then of course goes quickly back on her cell phone. A few other small instances, perhaps. Again, overall, our experience was totally great, and most other staff were very courteous, warm, and kind. (Getting everyone “on board” in that regard isn’t easy, but it’s always worth striving for in the hospitality world, which I think is so important, personally.)
In summary, I am so happy to leave this review, and mostly for Annette’s efforts at making our stay such a memorable experience. She certainly deserves some special recognition as an employee, and I could imagine, would suggest, a promotion in her near future. I hope so!
