On June 27, 1844, the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were martyred—killed by a mob that attacked them in Carthage Jail, located in Carthage, Illinois. The original jail has been carefully restored and is about a 30-minute drive from Historic Nauvoo.
Amazing place to come to learn history and feel closer to God and my ancestors.

Our family planned a two week church history tour to deepen our faith in Jesus Christ and strengthen our testimony of His gospel. Carthage Jail was one of the destinations of our visit, the missionaries on site did a wonderful job of sharing the story of the murder and martyrdom of the prophet Joseph Smith Jr and his brother Hyrum Smith.
