Hilton Garden Inn is our favorite (only) hotel in Iowa City. With a fantastic location, clean and updated rooms what keeps us coming back is the excellent staff - always willing to go the extra mile for the customer. Our favorite is Mills, at the front desk, who treats us like family. with a welcoming greeting and can-do attitude, she is professional dedicated to top-notch hospitality. This trip, we especially thank her for assisting with delayed check-out due to weather-related travel delays. We look forward to seeing her and the rest of the Hilton Garden Inn staff at our next visit.

Rooms are fine, mattresses are great, location hard to beat. However, parking is a nightmare and staff training on the issue is apparently, “Don’t help guests, blame the city.” The hotel uses a city owned garage for guest parking. The city only allows the hotel to give guests one one-use voucher at a time, which means guests have to visit the front desk every time they need to leave the hotel. This is more inconvenient than it sounds. Guests must take an elevator from their floor (9th, in my case) to the first floor, then another elevator to the second floor to access the parking garage. The second floor of the hotel coincides with parking garage between levels 2 and 3. Guests must then, depending on where they parked, head to the far left corner or the far right corner of the icy parking garage to take another elevator to the floor on which they parked. To review, that’s three elevators to get to your car. If you lose or forget the voucher (a 1”x 2” scrap of paper), you have to either pay for parking or make the trek back to the front desk. Don’t expect reimbursement, because the front desk blames everything on the city. I had to pay $22 for overnight parking because I couldn’t find my tiny voucher and there were cars behind me in line. When I told the front desk staffer, she just blamed the city. This hotel needs to renegotiate with the city and get some assigned parking spots for guests so at least they can avoid the third elevator. Or have guests register their cars and the city can monitor. That’s how The Chauncey used to handle it. That hotel closed but they certainly took better care of their guests. The two times the city mistakenly gave me a parking ticket when I stayed at The Chauncey, they handled it immediately and completely. City won’t renegotiate the terms? At the very least, offer to offset my $22 parking fee by comping my breakfast, which is why I was in the lobby in the first place. Please, someone buy The Chauncey and reopen!
