I feel like the days when staying at a hotel felt like a luxury are gone. The only real highlights of my stay here were seeing my name on the TV when I walked into the room and dining at Johnny’s Steakhouse, which had excellent food and outstanding staff. Outside of that, the experience was disappointing and not worth the price.
The staff were friendly, but they seemed disorganized and possibly understaffed. The service just felt chaotic. For the price I paid per night, I expected more. I’ve stayed at hotels downtown Des Moines for around $70 less and received a larger room with a king bed, a full kitchen, and a bigger bathroom. Here, the bathroom was very small, and as someone who’s on the heavier side, it was difficult to move around. I also noticed what looked like water stains in the shower, which led me to buy Clorox wipes just to feel comfortable using it.
On top of that, I had issues with bugs in my room—what I believe were water bugs. While the staff offered to spray or move me to a new room, the process wasn’t realistic since I had my dog with me. Their casual attitude toward the bug problem didn’t help either.
The bed was uncomfortable, though maybe I’m biased because I have a Sleep Number at home. Regardless, my back hurt the entire time, and I couldn’t wait to get home for a good night’s sleep. To make things worse, the outside lights shone directly into the room at night, and the curtains didn’t fully close, leaving streaks of light that kept waking me up.
Finally, the mini fridge was extremely noisy. It woke me up several times until I finally unplugged it, forgetting I had food inside that spoiled as a result. Another waste of money.
Overall, I was very disappointed. I truly enjoyed Johnny’s Steakhouse, but next time I’m in town, I’ll stay somewhere I’m more familiar with—better value, better experience, and if I want a great meal, I can always make the trip to Johnny’s for the food and service.
