I booked a guaranteed room at Holiday Inn Express Coralville back in April for a big October weekend, using a valid credit card and receiving an email confirmation. When we arrived we were told our reservation had been cancelled because my credit card had expired in the seven months since booking—and there was no room for us. There was no call, no email, no text at any point to let me know there was a problem or even that it was cancelled. In fact if you look at the reviews of this hotel, you will see us mentioned by another family having the same issue.
We were stranded in a completely sold-out city. The front desk quietly admitted this has happened to other guests, leaving people stranded on busy weekends and the hotel employees to deal with the aftermath.
After I complained to IHG, the most troubling part happened: the cancelled stay that had appeared in my online account suddenly disappeared, along with the stored card information tied to it. Additionally, management admitted IHG hadn’t actually held the room for us in April at all—they only entered the reservation about a week before our stay and then cancelled it a minute later. Whether that was a “system glitch” or not, the visible record of what happened was erased. Justin, the manager, was great at first trying to help me, and understand why this happened, but after passing this issue on to "higher ups" has since gone silent—no compensation, no accountability. I feel for these employees that have to deal with the unethical practices of IHG.
I’ve since read more about this disturbing trend of hotels doing this to guests during big game/parents’ weekends—early, lower-rate reservations quietly cancelled while rooms appear to be re-sold at much higher rates.
If you’re booking here for a big game or parents’ weekend, be warned: a confirmation and “guaranteed” reservation did not protect my family from being cancelled without notice, stranded, and left to pay hundreds more somewhere else.

The level of customer service here is a joke. The sign up front out helping guests is up all evening long. But they are not out helping guests.
Breakfast here is a sham. First morning was ok. Not great food but about what you expect. Second day came down at 905 and the place was cleaned out and long shut down my bad. It ends at 9am. Today I come down 830. Heard of teenage volkeyball people. They push in front and I wait enjoying a coffee till the crowd clears. 5 minutes till 9 I go up to get something to eat and they have shut everything down. Turned off the equipment and carried everything off. The lady looks at me and quickly walks away. The rudeness the staff exhibits is next level. I have never seen a motel have the breakfast hauled off 5 minutes early especially when the place is still packed. I’m her for over a week and wish I could change hotels. We won’t be back that’s for sure.

Had a room paid for several months in advance via Orbitz, showed up and the hotel had never confirmed my reservation. The hotel was fully booked for parents weekend, ended up finding a hotel an hour drive away. Would never book here again, there was another family trying to check in experiencing their own issue with their reservation. This hotel needs to do the basics: ensure they process the reservations in their system.
