Our stay at the Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo was overall pleasant. The oceanside location is stunning, and the outside hotel along with the surrounding property is unique, scenic, and well designed, with the Christmas decorations added a festive and memorable touch. Aside from the lobby, the rooms and much of the interior felt dated and overused, making the hotel better suited as a comfortable place to sleep rather than spend extended time indoors. The food was solid and included good vegetarian options. Overall, despite the age of the interiors, the location and character of the property make it a unique and enjoyable place to stay in Hilo.

The worst part of my trip to the Big Island.
Picture yourself sleeping basically in an industrial laundry room. Not in appearance but the sound ALL night long. Water running high pressure to a machine constantly every minute or so not one wink of sleep. But that awful night of torture cost you $500 US ($700 CND)
We decided to stay a night in Hilo while doing day trips around the island. The double tree by Hilton looked like the best option, some negative reviews but I figured maybe they were just one offs. We checked into to the hotel and were there met by smiling front staff, they were busy so we had to wait a little after check in to get our room as it wasn’t ready yet. We were told they upgraded us to ocean view for free so I thought wow lucky us. We spent little time in our room upon check in as we changed quickly to make a supper reservation. Upon return we had a tired family so we got ready for bed not quite noticing that when the lights go out and it gets quiet you are right next to a janitorial closet that I’m sure is constantly running laundry all night long and the wall to our room is the water to those machines. We were consistently bombarded by a loud and high pressure flow of water all throughout the night. We tried to shut our eyes and block out the sound but the water would turn on and off as my family tried to sleep and we soon realized there was zero chance of that happening anytime soon. I don’t believe there is any insulation in the walls to protect your guests from the sounds. So the relaxing high priced hotel we booked to have a nights rest was a fail and we are now more exhausted than ever. I wouldn’t rent this room to an enemy let alone a paying client.
The air conditioning in the room wouldn’t cool the room off either and we couldn’t open a window. Room was stuck at 79 all night.
Parking on property isn’t allowed, only valet for $25 or street parking. The valet is sooo busy and they don’t control the people pulling up to check in so it gets super backed up btw.
I called and asked for towels twice and not once did anyone show up.
As mentioned prior by other reviewers the sliding door to the bathroom leaves no privacy.

Valet parking is a totally unnecessary and time-consuming service. The parking lot is conveniently located, yet they insist on charging for valet parking just to make a profit. In the mornings, people had to wait in crowd for their cars, and cars were also waiting at the gate to be valet-parked at night. The rooms are in poor condition like from 80s, with a terrible smell of mold and mildew. The facilities are outdated and worn-out, and I had to use a faucet without a handle for three days and no one fixed it. AC was loud and the temperature was either too hot or too cold. Check out the photos for details. Will never come back!!!

Probably one of the worst hotels I have stayed in. It was raining when we arrived, so we parked with the valet, who were understandably busy. We requested for a bellhop because we had some luggage and were shown the place where the luggage carts were standing and given to understand that "self-help is the best help". The lobby is really a nonexistent vacuous space occupied with vapid check-in personnel. The check-in agent informed us that the first two bottles of water in the room are free and they will charge us if we needed more water. (All the progress we made in free WiFi and feee water in hotel rooms seems to regress here). The room itself was very run down and from a different century. The bedroom is separated from the restroom by a glass partition with a curtain, in case someone wants to entertain their wanton fetishes. A few strand of long black hair lay on the floor of the bathroom to welcome us . The turnover staff had left a trash bag on the table for us to put it in the trash can in order to promote self service. After few hours of cooling, the thermostat refused to budge from 80 degree F, which prompted a visit from the maintenance staff at 10:00 pm, which always a joy for the staff in uniform and the guest in pajamas. The maintenance staff informed us he cannot fix the problem and recommended we move to a different room after we had unpacked and were in pj's. Such a joy. The only thing redeeming about this hotel is its location. This really needs a serious makeover in infrastructure and management.

We had no housekeeping for 4 days. When we checked in, the front desk recommended every other day house keeping. After our first day we asked to change it to daily housekeeping. But the only 1 housekeeping we had in the next 4 days did not provide fresh towels, did not clean the bathroom, did not take out the bathroom garbage. The towels started to smell that it was difficult to walk in the bathroom because there was no place to put them. After speaking with the front desk 4-5 times in 2 days, we were promised daily housekeeping and fresh towels will be provided at certain hour, which did not happen. The front desk also promised compensation, which also did not happen. We asked for a manager 4 times. Front desk promised that the manager will call us, this did not happen either.
