I thought, “Yes, this is where I shall revive my road-weary soul. ”But then the acoustics introduced themselves." If soundproofing were a competitive sport, this place unfortunately would not make the team. Every hallway conversation arrived in my room with such clarity that I briefly considered stepping outside to participate. The guests above me appeared to be training for their Olympic stomping event—or perhaps dropping a bowling ball every so often to keep things spicy. As for the bathroom noise from the neighboring rooms let’s just say the experience was informative in ways I never requested. The walls carried sound with the enthusiasm of a gossiping coworker. And then came the bed—firm enough to qualify as geological terrain. I’m pretty sure geologists could take core samples. The sheets and blankets had a slight chemical smell, not overpowering but odd enough to make me wonder if they were fresh out of a laboratory testing chamber. To be fair, the hotel truly looks great, and the staff was friendly and helpful. But between the enthusiastic acoustics, the hard bed, and the overall sleep battle, it wasn’t quite the restful pit stop I hoped for on the long road home after Thanksgiving.
