Everyone was polite, professional, and aware of our event. The manager personally ensured our room was cleaned and ready. The beds were very comfortable, the pillows great, and the room spotless. The bad: I travel with a certified service dog, and during breakfast, my wife was approached by the young lady managing the food area in a rude and offensive manner. She loudly chastised her for having a “pet” near food—enough for other guests to notice. This behavior was unprofessional, disrespectful, and demonstrated a clear lack of understanding of the law regarding service animals. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title III, Section 36.302(c), service dogs are legally permitted to accompany their handlers in all areas of a facility where the public is allowed, including areas where food is served. Florida law (Florida Statutes §413.08) reinforces this, explicitly stating that individuals with service animals have the same rights to access public accommodations as any other member of the public. Staff may only ask two questions: Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? What work or task has the dog been trained to perform? They may not demand documentation, exclude the dog from food areas, or treat the handler disrespectfully. I strongly urge Hampton management to retrain their staff on ADA and state service animal laws to prevent this from happening again. Service dogs are not pets—they are essential, legally protected working partners. What happened was unacceptable, and I hope corrective action and proper education have since been taken.
