I have never before been embarrassed or uncomfortable to have a food allergy until last night. Our group went to the lounge to grab a bite to eat and when we arrived we were treated rudely when we asked if we could see the menu and get a table. Once we had sat down I stated I had an allergy and was grilled about how severe it was, being made to feel like I shouldn’t be at a restaurant if I had an allergy. Once I cleared it up that it was not anaphylactic I asked about some options on the menu, and the server quite loudly berated me for the other tables around to hear. She made me feel very uncomfortable that I was asking about ingredients and what I may have been able to eat, and suggesting items on the menu that I actually couldn’t eat due to my allergies. She then continued to go on about saying that the kitchen staff didn’t speak very good English and that I shouldn’t trust that I would be able to eat there. Sadly we did not eat here, but instead ordered in from a restaurant that has always taken my allergies seriously.

After having a bad experience with Hilton NYC, we decided to give Hilton another chance and booked DoubleTree by Hilton Edmonton. I’m so glad we did! This 3-star hotel is much better than the NYC high-rise. The room was very clean and exactly like the photos. The front desk and housekeeping staff were kind and friendly, and the location was perfect for us — within walking distance of the convention centre. The price was also better compared to nearby hotels. I highly recommend it if you need to stay in downtown Edmonton. Such a shame the hot tub was out of order during our stay.

Rooms are pretty nice. The housekeeping staff are very nice. The food at the restaurant was not very good. It was lukewarm or cold like it had been sitting for a while before being served. The bar manager charged gratuity on the bill for group of 6 or more. There were only 5 of us eating. Did not disclose this to us before paying so he got a double gratuity. When we questioned it he just stood there and did nothing to rectify. Also, the menu did not disclose that there would be gratuity added to parties of 6 or more printed on it so kind of deceitful in my opinion. Will never eat there again.

The room was nice enough, BUT. The restaurant.... Took over an hour to get food, salmon was raw in the middle. Waitress apologized and offered free desert. Restaurant manager came over with the strangest approach asking if everything was ok. Communication between staff was non existent. Hotel was booked by my Local as I was staying there for a union event. Local was covering everything. On check out, the front desk tried to charge many of us for parking at $30 a night. In the end, they waved the parking charge. Overall not a good experience.

*Hilton Employee Walked Into Our Room While We Slept* I stayed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Edmonton Downtown on October 10th, and it was one of the MOST uncomfortable hotel experiences I’ve ever had. At 1 a.m., a male staff member unlocked and entered our room while we were asleep. My 17-year-old niece woke up to find him standing inside near our beds before he stepped back out and knocked, saying he was there to drop off a blanket we had been waiting on since 10 p.m.. I don’t know how long he was in there and if he got spooked when my niece woke up. He then went back outside and knocked on our door like it never happened. We had asked for extra bedding several times, and when I went down in my pajamas at 11:45 p.m., the front desk employee was rude about it. Then, hours later, someone quietly coming into our locked room made us feel completely unsafe and unsettled. I reported it the next morning and later contacted Hilton’s head office, but they refused to discuss it with me because I wasn’t the one who booked the room. My mom (who did) emailed them twice and never got a reply. There’s absolutely no excuse for a staff member entering a guest’s room at 1 a.m. without warning, and the lack of response from Hilton made it even worse. I’ve stayed here many times before, but after this, I’ll be choosing a different hotel.
