Our son has been going here for over a year and we love it. Shawn and Mrs Caroline are awesome. Very patient, and they teach practical application of karate in the real world, self defense/ bullies/ de-escalation/ etc. It’s not just learning moves for a kata, they apply those moves for real world situations in a way that makes it fun and understandable for the kids. It’s great to see our son rank up and improve in a set of skills that he might need one day. Definitely recommend!

Great experience!
Shawn is an expert teacher who genuinely cares about his students. He takes the time to ensure they truly understand the material, rather than rushing them through an assembly-line approach.

Lone Star Karate & Self Defense has been our home for the last 16 years! We have had 3 kiddos enrolled in their program with one graduating out with his black belt! The program for kids is great, but they also have classes for adults that extend beyond karate/self defense, so be sure to ask about those. Highly recommend!!

Caroline and Shawn have a gift for teaching karate in a way that’s both fun and incredibly effective. They know how to channel kids’ energy into focus, confidence, and skill—both mentally and physically. If your child needs a little structure (or just a fun reason to put their tablet down), this is the place!

Lone Star Karate is amazing with the kids of all ages. They really take the time to work with each student, encourage, and praise them. I love that they teach students how to respect but also protect themselves when it comes to strangers. As a parent, it's the last thing you want to worry about, but grateful that you have Shawn and Caroline as instructors to teach them and explain. They really treat their students like family! Their classes are a perfect blend of discipline and fun. I highly, highly recommend!
Frequently Asked Questions About Lone Star Karate & Self Defense
My child is excited to start, but they’ve quit other activities in the past. How can we help them stick with martial arts?
The key is consistency and parental support. When parents commit to bringing their child to class once or twice a week, it builds a routine that helps the child stay engaged and motivated. With regular attendance, kids naturally progress in their martial arts journey—and with time, they gain the confidence and skills needed to achieve the powerful goal of earning a black belt.
Is martial arts good exercise if my child needs to lose weight?
Yes! Martial arts offers an incredible full-body workout. Combined with a balanced diet, regular training can greatly improve your child’s physical health. More importantly, as they feel stronger and more capable, they’ll also develop confidence and self-esteem—skills that benefit them far beyond the dojo.
Do I need any martial arts experience to join?
Not at all! Whether you're interested in getting fit, building confidence, developing discipline, or just trying something new, our classes are designed to support every level—from absolute beginners to experienced students. Everyone starts somewhere, and we’re here to help you succeed.
Why is learning self-defense important?
We live in a world where knowing how to protect yourself and your loved ones is a valuable life skill. Martial arts teaches not just physical techniques, but also awareness, smart decision-making, and the ability to stay calm under pressure—tools that can help avoid or de-escalate dangerous situations.
How is Lone Star Karate different from going to the gym?
At Lone Star Karate, you’ll get a great workout—but you’ll also train your mind, build focus, and develop confidence in a motivating, social environment. You’re not alone here; you’ll be part of a supportive community that encourages you every step of the way.
Will martial arts make my child more aggressive?
Definitely not. In fact, we teach the opposite. From day one, students learn to use self-control, respect, and common sense. We emphasize that martial arts is for defense only—and that knowing when not to use force is just as important as knowing how.
My child isn’t naturally athletic—can they still do martial arts?
Absolutely! Martial arts isn’t about being the best athlete—it’s about personal growth. Every child progresses at their own pace, and we celebrate effort and improvement. Many kids who don’t thrive in team sports find their confidence and strength in martial arts.
What should I look for in a martial arts school?
Great question! Visit the school in person—meet the instructors, observe a class, and talk to other parents. Look for clear pricing, options to try a free class, and whether parents are welcome to watch. A good school will be transparent, welcoming, and focused on both physical and personal development.
Why choose Lone Star Karate & Self Defense?
We’ve proudly served Richmond, Rosenberg, and Pecan Grove since 2002. While other schools have come and gone, we’ve remained a trusted presence in the community. We have experienced adult instructors on the mat every class, low student-to-instructor ratios, and a commitment to giving each student the attention they need to grow.
Do I need to be in shape to start?
Not at all! We welcome students of all fitness levels. Our instructors will meet you where you are, guide you at your own pace, and never pressure you to do anything you’re not comfortable with. Everyone's journey looks different—and that's okay.
What are the prices? Are there hidden fees?
We believe in full transparency. Our prices are clearly listed on our website, and your first class is free. There’s a $50 registration fee which covers your uniform. Testing fees are $50, $75, or $100 depending on the level—and include the cost of belts, uniforms, and gear.
What should I wear to my first class?

How often can I attend classes?
We offer multiple classes each week, and we recommend coming at least twice a week for steady progress. You’re welcome to attend less frequently, but it may take longer to advance to your next belt.
Will I have help in class?
Yes! Every class is led by a skilled adult instructor, with assistant instructors and advanced students there to help as needed. We focus on learning, not competition—so everyone, from staff to students, is ready to support you.
