I visited tonight to purchase a pair of snow pants and boots for a trip. All of the staff who assisted me were friendly and knowledgeable about the products, as well as the membership and discounts available. I unfortunately didn’t catch the names of the individuals who assisted me in the dressing room area or shoe area, but David assisted me with my check out experience. He helped me make sure I received the best pricing available for the shoes I bought, and also assisted me in ordering a product to my home in the preferred color I wanted that wasn’t available in store. Great experience, will definitely be back to this location!

This is a cumulative review of REI and my thoughts and experience with REI as a company. I am not singling out any specific REI, this location just is the one closest to where I currently live. REI, well it’s a good store with good products. I went to one REI earlier this year in February of 2025 to purchase gear for my Appalachian Trail Through Hike attempt. Needless to say I was successful in my completion. Technically every REI location has the gear that any average man or woman would need for a successful “through hike attempt”. From Georgia to Maine here is what I noticed with REI culture, staff, and knowledge. The culture does seem to be outdoor driven to an extent. For the most part the staff is friendly and willing to help a person be “fitted” for outdoor adventures. The staff as a whole seem to be great, decent, and helpful folks. However it seems like at least one employee or staff member at every store that I have been to, likes to be rude, start problems, or be on some high horse. I don’t know why this is, but it seems to be a very common theme. Knowledge, yes I will admit that the employees and staff know the products that they have on the shelf. But what they don’t have is the expertise of actual use of products or the actual working knowledge of how to accomplish something. Anyone can load a pack down with gear and survive a day or two in the woods next to their car, anyone can deck out a touring bike and load it down with gear and survive a weekend bike trip, anyone can have skis and snowboards assembled and put on snow gear and get down a slop. As a child, teen, and young adult, I knew that REI was the place to go for advice, knowledge, and how to’s; to be outdoors if you were not fishing, hunting, reloading ammo, and target shooting of sorts. This was the place to go to just be outdoors on a budget and learn to take things slow. Now collectively it seems to be the place that people who want to look like they go outdoors for hiking, camping, biking, etc… go to buy said items. After hiking the Appalachian Trail, I cannot get any person in a store to talk to me about hiking and camping because they know that I have the skills to get someone down a trail successfully. I cannot get straight answers on other activities because they know I have the time and mindset to put in the work to do a said activity. Plus the amount of gear that I would be running through via testing and exchanging due to the fact of finding what works and what doesn’t work. I like REI as a whole, I really do, they sell gear that just get a person out there in the woods and their focus is just that vs guns, fishing, and hunting as a whole. But what’s upsetting as a whole is the lack of knowledge and current knowledge of gear that is truly a trend/fad or what’s really tried and true to get a task accomplished. As for this specific location being Troy Michigan, the bike shop guys did a sweet job getting me fitted and setup on a gravel bike that I can actually tour on if I so chose to. Recently it’s been a massive help with the touring setup helping me get around town to grocery shop, stay active, and transportation to and from work. They really did do an exceptional job teaching me about the gear, getting my bike tuned and dialed in, and even cause me to want to come back for service to have them to continue servicing my bike rather than me doing it myself and possibly destroying it as I learn how to properly do it. And for that I am highly greatful. I just wish REI still was the place to go to get solid advice on outdoor recreation and activities rather than a department store where the best products seem to be the highest price ones when someone asks for advice. Mind you, the bike shop at Troy did not do this with me. They laid out many options, pros/cons, and personal experiences with the gear they suggested. I even test road a few different options before selecting the bike that I did end up choosing.

Had a terrible experience there on Saturday We are Canadian and decided to cross the border as we had heard great things about the store for our upcoming hiking trip We had a list of items to Purchase The service was terrible. We had someone trying to help us with hiking pants that didn’t seem interested in us at all. Then rain coats were of poor quality The prices were truly outrageous. Honesty double the price Off what one would pay in Canada and in American dollars The hiking boots that we went for were outrageously expensive to the point of affordable we ended getting a cheaper pair than I would have liked but I Was worried we wouldn’t be able to get them if we waited too much longer as the season might be gone They were about 10 people in the store in terms of customer service when we went to check out there was two people ahead of us in line and only one person at the counter to check people out. He had already taken 20 minutes with one customer finally someone had to tell him to get other people to check us out out. I learned I had to pay a $30 membership fee and at that point I should’ve just aborted but have investing me and my children time looking for the boots I decided to purchase Immediately on my return, I went to the Columbia outlet here in windsor And everything here was way better quality, and about half the price And customer service was superb here in Canada I totally regret getting the membership and the items I purchased. I plan to return them. Please don’t waste your time or money going to the store. It’s not worth it instead Go to a Columbia outlet store where everything is way cheaper and better quality
