Skeffington’s Formal Wear was established in 1951 and was one of the first tuxedo rental companies in America. Pete Leo started his career with Skeffington’s in 1954 on the ground floor of the Savory Hotel in Des Moines. In 1976, Pete purchased the suit rental company from its original owner. Skeffington’s has always been a family-oriented apparel business. Over the years Pete was joined at times by his sons, daughters, nephews and grandchildren. The company is still family owned and operated. Known as “Uncle Pete” to much of the Italian American community on the southside of Des Moines, Pete Leo was not only a pioneer and innovator in the formal wear industry, but he was also a selfless and generous man.

Fiancée and I attempted to order suits from this place for our wedding. Workers were all very nice, but incredibly disorganized.
After our first consultation with them, they took weeks to get back to us despite telling us we would hear back from them in less than a week. It took me calling several times and threatening to cancel my orders to get someone to send us an invoice of all items needed and their pricing.
Then, after we finally hear from them, the invoice was incorrect by a decent margin, not just little mistakes either.
We went in in March to get our measurements for the suits, and they apologized for all the miscommunications, so we felt that was a clean slate and we decided to move forward with them.
Jump to today, where my best man called to verify the process for paying the deposit for the suit and to try it on. We were told by Kylie during our measurement appointment to come back before the end of April and pay the deposit before that date. My best man called and Kylie had no idea why that was said and that they didn’t need to come in to pay the deposit. According to my best man, she also had no idea that she was speaking to the best man and not the groom (me).
All in all, the workers were nice and cordial, but they got so many things wrong and miscommunicated that I had no confidence that they would be able to fulfill our order without further issues.
We really wanted to go through this business for our suits, and we really tried, but we can’t afford to be constantly worrying about everything possibly being wrong or misunderstood.
I would use a different shop.

Such a wonderful experience I can’t remember the young man’s name who helped us (old people brain) lol anyhow we came in at 5:40 thinking they closed at 7 but it’s Friday so closing is at 6 but we were greeting with smiles no less he stayed and helped he got my sons measurements for his prom tux he did not rush he had my sons measurements try on differentSuch a wonderful experience! What happens if I accidentally damage a rental?
All rental orders include a $10 damage waiver that covers minor stains, rips, or wear-and-tear repairs. Our professional dry cleaners and tailors are highly skilled in addressing such issues. However, for items that are lost, intentionally damaged, or returned in an unsalvageable condition, a replacement fee may be applicable.
When do I return my rental?
Rental items are due for return on the next business day following your event. Returns can be made at any of our five retail locations. For added convenience, we provide Express-Return drop boxes at our Des Moines store, which are accessible outside of regular business hours.
