I hesitated to share this, but I think it’s important for others to know about my experience.
My friend and I visited the Columbia Outlet store in Edmonton on October 9th around 7–7:30 pm. We both had 15% off single-item coupons from another Columbia outlet in Ontario. We found two jackets on the clearance rack, which already had an additional 10% discount. Since my friend doesn’t speak English well, I asked the staff, “Can we use the coupon?” The staff didn’t ask me any questions and just told me, “You can only use one coupon.” So, my understanding was that each of us could use our own coupon once.
When we presented the first coupon at checkout, the cashier became quite unpleasant and raised her voice, saying, “You already got 10% off clearance — and you want another 15% off?” She then said the coupon only applied to items over $100, but that rule wasn’t written anywhere on the coupon. When I pointed that out, she seemed irritated and went to ask her manager. After coming back, she asked where we got the coupon from and eventually allowed my friend’s discount.
When I used my own coupon for my clearance clothing, the staff became even more impatient and upset. She went to her manager again, then came back and told me that I couldn’t use it because “you can only use one coupon.” I explained that we were using the coupons for different people and different items. Then another cashier joined and told us that “one family can only use one coupon per visit,” and if we wanted to use another coupon, we would have to come back the next day. I explained that we were not a family, but she replied, “one group can only use one coupon per visit.”
At that moment, the manager walked over and loudly said, “I already told you that earlier,” making it seem like the situation was entirely my fault. She then whispered to the cashier, “call me if you need me,” and walked away. The cashier then asked me, very impatiently, “Do you still want to buy it?” In the end, I decided not to make the purchase — not because of the price, but because of the unpleasant customer service. I honestly thought it might have been my mistake until I went back to Ontario and confirmed that wasn’t the case.
When I returned to Ontario and visited another Columbia outlet, I asked about the same coupon. The staff there kindly explained that it could be used on clearance items and that both coupons can be used on different single items.
The shopping experience I had at the Edmonton Columbia store made me feel as though I was treated that way on purpose. It seemed like the staff changed the rules based on what I said. Columbia has always been one of my favorite stores to visit, and I’ve never experienced a situation like this at any other location. If the coupon rules are unclear, I believe it’s the store’s responsibility to properly train their employees. The cashier kept repeating, “my manager said that” or “it’s what my manager told me,” which made it feel as though the store was being run by the manager and the personal decisions rather than company policy. It gave me the impression that the manager could make or change rules at any time.
Overall, this experience left me very disappointed. I’ve always enjoyed shopping at Columbia, but after this visit, I won’t be returning to this store again.

The cashier did not apply any of the discounts, including the paper coupon I gave and she kept. I didn't notice until I was home (in Edmonton, 40 mins drive away).
She told me to grab another item since it was a "better deal" to combine their BOGO 50% off with my $20 off coupon. I told her I was okay, but she told me again it was a better deal. I ran and grabbed something quick since we were now holding the line up.
She ran it all through and we left. It did seem a little high but honestly, I was with my kid and flustered already from having to go run and grab another item quickly.
Checked the receipt once home... and no 50% off discount anywhere. No $20 off anywhere. Called the store and they said I need to come back for them to do anything about it. So I'm supposed to make a 2 hour trek back to Nisku for their mistake? And just hope that they actually give me the refund, since I no longer even have the $20 off coupon? Absolutely ridiculous.
