We worked with Aaron at Wintrust to secure a mortgage for a single family home. When we first met him, my partner and I immediately hit it off the bat with him—he is a super likable guy who is clearly passionate about what he does. Overall, our experience with Wintrust was good and much better than the previous experience I had with a different lender for my condo mortgage. However, there were a couple things that could be improved - I’ll attempt to describe those here. First, we were told from the start that we were “the strongest buyers” and that we qualified for the best available interest rate and lender credits. When our credit was pulled a second time just before locking in an interest rate, my partner’s credit score went down to a lower bracket—this was ONLY due to the hard inquiry made by Wintrust and no other reason. While Aaron and Justin worked to make sure our offered rate could stay the same, we suddenly no longer qualified for the full amount of the lender credit. We had to fight to get some returned to us. It was traumatizing to be told you are “the strongest buyers” to then having privileges suddenly revoked because of something entirely outside of your control. While some of these issues (e.g., the credit scoring system) are outside of the lender’s hands, they do have control over the credits they issue. Unfortunately, we lost some trust in the process and Wintrust due to the way this was handled. While Aaron and Justin worked to fix some things and we do appreciate those efforts, we would have liked to see the full lender credit granted to us ($800 vs. $400). With rates and inflation as high as they were when we purchased, $400 was still a great deal of money for us to lose out on. Additionally, while the response time for communications was EXCELLENT before we were locked in, they became noticeably slower afterwards. We would have liked to see the same response time carried throughout the closing process. Wintrust made it clear that their team proactively contacts their clients when rates drop significantly for possible refinancing purposes, so we are holding them to their word. We like Aaron a lot and hope things work out so we can stay longer term with Wintrust when rates end up dropping.

My partner and I just purchased a home through Wintrust Mutual and used a VA home loan, if anyone has worked with the VA than you know it is not always the easiest task, but Craig and his team made it seem effortless. Their team worked quickly and efficiently all the while answering any little question we had along the way. This being our first home my partner and I felt at ease knowing Wintrust Mortgage was doing the leg work. Thank you for such a smooth first home buying experience!
