Lied to us about the check out process, telling us that we didn't need to be there in person as long as we gave notice that we had moved out and that no walk-out was necessary. Boy was that a big, fat lie.
We gave notice on the day of move-out, both by phone and by e-mail. No acknowledgement. Months later, we find out that we had been charged, not only for extra, unnecessary rent but also for extra, unnecessary days of utilities. No attempts to contact us were made, and we only find this out after a debt collection agency begins harassing my mother, the guarantor of our property. Attempts to contact the apartment complex regarding the debt were futile ("Hold on, my manager is busy but she will call you later" - stated 2 weeks ago with no call back). At the end of the day, we ended up having to give an extra $497.06 to IQ international.
This is not the only grievance we have experienced with Maywood and its lackluster management. A year into our tenancy, we get surcharged an extra several hundred dollars for not having ample coverage for renter's insurance. Guess what? We were covered the whole time. Navigating the refund process for this spurious charge took months, and to be frank, I'm not actually convinced that we ever did get refunded for this.
And then there's the apartments themselves. Kitchen vents don't work and stink up the apartment. The fire alarm is hypersensitive. The water pressure and temperature suck. One bedroom is always hotter than the other. Once a year, a fire goes off the the middle of the night (at 3-4 AM), blaring, screaming, unsympathetic to the plights of the new parents trying to get some shuteye and to the students who need their sleep to be ready for tomorrow's exam. And management's hands are tied.
During one winter, the drywall in the ceiling ruptured, causing dust and whatever it is they keep in the ceiling to coat the apartment. We were the lucky ones, too - for our neighbors who also lived in the complex, they also suffered a similar experience, but it was so severe that they were forced to evacuate their apartment (by management). They were not given alternate lodging or reimbursed for their troubles. The place isn't even safe - there was a string of car break ins throughout my time here, and even my car got broken into. Numerous times I would take walk in the "super walkable location" and come across a homeless person rummaging through the trash. There was even an episode with a homeless man wandering through the parking garage threatening a young lady trying to go from her car to her apartment.
All in all, I would wholeheartedly recommend not moving to this complex, especially when there's so many other good apartments in the area (literally across the street). You may find some reviews here praising the management, or the location, or the views. Well, management turnover is disturbingly high (peep their reply to this review), you can find other apartments in this exact location, and half the views are of the inside of the apartment complex (y'know, the view that's in the photos. They raise their rent prices every year, so the "value" in staying at the Maywood is dwindling too.
Sure it's easy to move in, but good luck sticking around, and good luck trying to leave without getting fined. The people who posted positive reviews simply haven't been screwed over yet.
