After some time after leaving there I feel like I can't just let my experience be overcast by time gone by. Some places deserve to be called out. Working maintenance at Beacon Residence in New Hartford was one of the worst professional experiences I’ve ever had. The operation was completely disorganized from top to bottom — no real training, no issued uniforms, no accountability, and very little professionalism from management. The lead maintenance worker often gave confusing or unnecessary directions and discouraged doing things correctly if it took “too long.” He regularly told me to handle tasks in ways that were inefficient, unsafe, and made no sense — like manually transferring mixed recycling and trash instead of properly disposing of it. It was degrading work that served no actual purpose other than to appear busy. The property manager seemed helpful in front of residents but never followed through on serious maintenance issues. Every time I brought up real concerns — like leaks, mold, and safety hazards — I was told “my hands are tied.” Reports went nowhere, and nothing was ever resolved. The most alarming problem was the mold. Each apartment has its own maintenance room with HVAC and water shutoffs, and those areas are supposed to be inspected regularly. Management claimed they had been. I personally checked all 230 rooms myself and found black mold and active leaks in over a dozen. Instead of doing proper remediation or moisture testing, they brought in two technicians from another Beacon property to just spray mold killer and leave. This is in a retirement home where residents are elderly and more vulnerable to respiratory problems — completely unacceptable. If I could post the pictures here I would, but please contact me for them if needed. The rehabilitation section of the facility, which receives state funding, has also become a problem. It’s chaotic — frequent disturbances, damaged units, and poor oversight. It feels like the company prioritizes filling rooms and funding over the actual safety or well-being of residents. We didn’t even have company vehicles for supply runs, meaning we had to use our own cars to pick up materials from stores like Lowe’s. Since we didn’t personally own trucks, many projects couldn’t be completed properly. Management constantly pushed the “make it work” mentality without giving us what we needed to do the job right. Beacon in New Hartford could be a great facility if it were managed by people who actually cared about quality and compliance. But as it stands, it’s full of neglect, corner-cutting, and poor leadership. I wouldn’t recommend working there or sending a loved one to live there until real accountability and professionalism are brought in.

My friend is constantly harassed by staff. We go to visit he gets a call about inspecting the apartment every time. Then there are complaints that he's smoking in apartment. He doesn't smoke! Never has. Recently his new girlfriend went to visit him she wasn't there but 10 minutes when he gets a call to inspect his apartment. Then a few days later there's a complaint that he's smoking in apartment while she's visiting him. Neither one of them smokes. Sounds like there are jealous women who are upset that he has a girlfriend. If this keeps up we're going to call our friend Senator Chuck Schumer and have an investigation launched in the meadows and its clear harassment of it tenants and other privacy violations.

2 attempts to get a tour. Failed. Even with an appointment. Arrived early for a scheduled appointment, sign on door said closed and a number to call. Did not get any call to cancel or reschedule. Reached a recorded message. No one returned call. Only reason for the 2 stars is because of conversations with residents. They were friendly and spoke well of the facility. No positive comments about the office.

As author of the book, Public Administration and Disability (Racino, 2014), I received your glossy advertisement for Meadows Senior Living, close to Presbyterian Homes (in a former research study) and Preswick Glen (advertised on our news channels), another private entity (Google Maps). Assisted living was a reform of nursing home facilities and Section 8 "portability" (e.g., live in the suburbs near the family) is different from facility-based Section 8 as part of large project developments approved by the "local, state and federal governments". Believe it or not, the approvals and funds come all the way through Housing Appropriations Committee which Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine is chairing. The above complaint that I heard was that people often do not like bathrooms and livingrooms connected, similar to sitting near the bathroom in a restaurant. We usually have the door radius and accessibility which often nursing facilities and government projects did not abide by! And we agreed to people being able to move their furniture to their new place, way back! And then there are pets! Section 8, non-project based, continues to be limited with waiting lists. Other affordable housing, such as housing associations and cooperatives, may "include Section 8 funds" in their building or capital plans.
