My husband and I recently moved out of Maclaren after living there for 4 years. Although my job relocated us to a different area of the cities, we likely could have made it work to stay there longer, however we were done paying so much money for what felt like little benefit. This apartment complex has very few amenities (in-unit washer/dryer, a limited gym, 1 garage parking space), and the buildings are quite old and falling apart more every year, in which management is doing nothing to upkeep them – I’m not sure how management justifies the steep monthly rent price. On top of that, maintenance requests take several weeks to be addressed (this is of no fault of Jr the maintenance worker, he works his butt off for the residents). Notice how I said maintenance worker, as Jr was the only one for several years responsible for addressing countless of problems in hundreds of units. While talking with Jr, it was obvious that he is overworked and mistreated by management as well. A reoccurring issue for us was black mold in our HVAC system every fall. The first year we dealt with this it was addressed immediately, appropriately, and with sincere apology (a different property manager at the time). In following years, it was ignored for weeks. When they got around to it, they “cleaned” the inside of the HVAC system and painted over the vent covers to make it look clean. We attribute the black mold to be caused by the apartment running the heat on blast through mid-May every year. During spring transitions we dealt with several 80-90 degree days that residents did not have AC, in which the apartment told us to keep windows open and shut the blinds (those two statements contradict each other). Walking into the main hall of our building felt like a sauna on these days, so I can only imagine the moisture accumulating behind the walls to be discovered come fall season.
A few summers ago, our unit was somehow triggering the fire alarms in our building, and SPFD was at our door every week. Most of these occurrences happened while we were away from home, sleeping, etc. Management eventually began scolding us for continuously setting off the alarm… until it was discovered that a spider behind the walls was triggering the sensor of the alarms. They never apologized for putting the blame on us.
Also during our time there we had every single appliance replaced except the microwave. The most frustrating experience was the washer and dryer. These machines (Asko) are expensive, TINY, and require endless upkeep from residents. It took us several days to complete our laundry, and drying out the condenser of these machines accumulated even more laundry. Not to mention these machines are Scandinavian and acquiring a new part takes weeks if not months. From July-October 2024, we were without a washer and/or dryer as we had countless issues with them. During this time management was too cheap to buy new machines and tried to fix the machines that were beyond repair. Not once did management offer a reduction in rent (keep in mind this is one of the only amenities of the complex), in which I had to advocate hard for this myself, and insisted on getting brand new machines. Jr was in and out of our unit every day trying to troubleshoot these machines, many times past business hours, and hauling heavy machines up and down the stairs by himself. Additionally, both Jr and my husband were electrocuted on two different occasions while simply trying to unplug the machines.
Shoutout to Jr for advocating for residents and working to the best of his ability to make it right for us – there’s a reason that most of the good reviews are regarding him. Although the space we had in our unit was awesome (the reason I’m giving 2 stars), the countless problems we had, and lack of amenities pushed us to move out of Maclaren. To anyone looking at Maclaren as their future home, please consider elsewhere if you want to feel valued as a resident, and gain more from your hard-earned money.
