My name is Laura Castellanos, and I am the mother of Brooklyn, a 9-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog. I am writing to express my deep concern and frustration regarding the care provided to my dog at your clinic, in the hope that this situation is acknowledged and prevented from happening to other patients.
On Wednesday, August 13 of this year, Brooklyn ingested approximately a quarter of my sandal while at home. Over the following days, he experienced loose stools, so I provided him with a bland diet consisting of rice, pumpkin, and chicken. On Friday, August 15, after showing signs of improvement and normalization of his stools, I offered him his regular food, Hill’s. However, immediately afterward, he again began having severe diarrhea, which worsened significantly on Sunday, August 17, when his diarrhea became extreme, and he was clearly uncomfortable and weak.
That same Sunday, upon closer observation, I noticed that his testicles were red, purple, and swollen, which alarmed me greatly. I requested an appointment for Monday, August 18, at 8:15 a.m., but due to the severity of his condition, I brought Brooklyn to the clinic at 7:00 a.m. From that moment, I noticed a concerning lack of communication and empathy: the assistant took Brooklyn without explaining the care plan, and I received no information throughout the day until I myself contacted the clinic around 2:00 p.m. It was only after that time that they began examining him. I was finally able to pick him up after 5:30 p.m., having received only instructions to administer medication and perform general tests, without a definitive diagnosis, being told only that he had an infection in his scrotum.
After continuing with the prescribed treatment, on Wednesday, August 20, Brooklyn woke up with his testicles and scrotum even more swollen and in evident pain. Dr. Antiyonne Hauser advised me to urgently visit Carolina Vet Specialist. Upon arrival, the receptionist informed me that tests would be performed to determine Brooklyn’s condition, as he could not even walk due to the pain. Later, the doctor at Carolina Vet Specialist indicated that it appeared to be a skin infection—a diagnosis completely different from the one previously received at Banfield, where I was told that Brooklyn needed surgery, but at that moment there was no available staff to perform it. I was also told that I should return on Thursday, August 21, at 10:00 a.m., when staff would be available. For just this evaluation and the administration of a pain medication, I paid $500, which caused even more confusion and frustration due to the lack of clarity and consistency in the diagnoses.
On August 21, after returning home from the emergency visit around 5:00 a.m., an acquaintance recommended that I go to Banfield in Kannapolis. Between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., I contacted the clinic, where the receptionists were very empathetic and understanding of my situation, especially noting that I am not fluent in English. I explained that it was an emergency and that I needed my dog to be seen immediately. They acted very efficiently and connected me with Dr. Raúl, who speaks Spanish. After describing Brooklyn’s symptoms, the doctor expressed his willingness to help without delay. Although the trip from my home to Kannapolis takes approximately two hours, I set out immediately. Upon arrival, Dr. Raúl examined Brooklyn and, understanding the severity of his condition, diagnosed him with orchitis (testicular torsion) accompanied by an infection—completely different from the information I had previously received. Thanks to his prompt intervention, Brooklyn was admitted for urgent surgery and finally received the proper treatment. I wish to highlight the kindness, professionalism, and empathy of both Dr. Raúl and the receptionists at Banfield Kannapolis, who provided constant support and kept me informed throughout the process.
This experience has caused me significant frustration, concern, and distrust, seeing that for several days my dog was in evident pain without receiving a correct diagnosis or timely care.
