I brought my dog Bear in for an emergency care appointment with Dr. Flick and left feeling frustrated, dismissed, and disappointed.
Two different techs came in separately to ask me the same questions, which made the visit feel disorganized. When Dr. Flick finally entered, she seemed visibly annoyed that we were even there and kept saying to Bear, “Buddy, you’ve been here all day,” as if we were inconveniencing her rather than being there for an emergency visit. Bear’s first appointment lasted about 15 minutes, and the emergency visit with Dr. Flick was maybe 15 minutes total — even though we were at the clinic from 8:30 a.m. until nearly noon. We ended up waiting far longer than he was actually seen.
When Bear got scared and pulled away, I told her he was nervous, but she made no effort to comfort him. Her tone felt cold and impatient from the start.
I explained that we’d been at the clinic all day because Bear had just seen the cardiologist. He has a heart murmur and needed an echocardiogram before being cleared for dental work — something the clinic had previously recommended. Once cleared, I booked this emergency visit to get him pain relief, a refill of his gabapentin (which was running out), and possibly antibiotics, since the clinic required an appointment for new prescriptions.
Bear has been in pain — not eating his treats, struggling to eat softened food, sneezing, pawing at his nose, and acting lethargic. I asked if he could be seen sooner by the dental vet due to his worsening symptoms. Dr. Flick said the clinic doesn’t do emergency dental appointments. I mentioned that my cat Henry had been seen urgently by Dr. Elbaz under similar circumstances and asked if she could check with him, but she refused, repeating that emergency dental care isn’t offered.
I told her I was worried about infection, but she said unless Bear’s face was swollen, it wasn’t considered an emergency. Her exam was brief — she just rubbed his belly and listened to his heart before saying she couldn’t tell if infection was present. I was the one who suggested starting antibiotics as a precaution. It honestly felt like I was doing more problem-solving than she was.
She didn’t offer any alternatives or suggestions for where I could take Bear for emergency dental care. I had to be the one to ask if there were any clinics that might see him sooner. It felt like she was dead set on not helping us — as if she wasn’t taking Bear’s condition seriously at all.
She seemed rushed, offered little reassurance, and used medical terms without explaining them clearly. I had to repeat questions to get direct answers, which only seemed to frustrate her further.
The only positive part of the visit was the front desk staff — they were kind, patient, and helped get Bear on a cancellation list. They even checked insurance options for us since the visit cost around $1,200 and the upcoming dental work will be about $2,500. Their kindness was a striking contrast to Dr. Flick’s detached attitude.
Overall, this emergency visit was disappointing and disheartening. Pet owners come in worried and seeking help, not to feel dismissed or like an inconvenience. Compassion, patience, and communication are essential in veterinary care.

I recently adopted a little Frenchie mix who is high energy and super reactive but also in need of a checkup and way overdue for a nail trim.
I am so happy to have found VCA online, they have many locations Westborough is closest to us.Our first visit didn’t go very well .. my poor little girl was petrified and made sure everyone in the office knew it . Dr Elbaz was patient gentle and completely understanding. No treatment was forced on her and we were not charged for the appointment. Instead we were given 2 prescriptions for anti anxiety medication and a new appointment. Which was today and was such a great experience.The whole staff is friendly and welcoming from check in to check out. Dr Elbaz is very down to earth and easy to talk to. The assistants were also very relaxed and easy to talk to . VCA is very affordable and has a no pressure approach . No products or treatments were pushed on me at either of our appointments and it is obvious that they are very well stocked with anything needed to care for or spoil our pets . The first visit is FREE Im not sure how long this special deal will be valid I would suggest anyone needing to take their pet for a check up look into VCA . The staff is friendly compassionate and knowledgeable they will do right by you , your precious pet and your pocket ♥️
