Absolutely beautiful place to take your sick fur child to. Our 12 year old baby Matcha developed an abscess. She's a indoor cat with her brother. We noticed she started having some breathing issues and thought it was an infection so my husband drove to West Hartford VCA. He was met by kind hearted and compassionate professional staff members who received Matcha with warmth and care.
It was Friday evening and there were only two fur babies before Matchas turn. They saw Matcha quickly and Doctor William Morris came to speak to my husband about the results. This doctor really cares about the fur children. Dr. Morris showed much compassion and care while informing my husband that Matcha has Cancer and said she had around two weeks at best without conventional medicine. The doctor informed us of all the choices we had and was very supportive. Again I speak about his compassion which is Love because that's how humanity should be. Where we see so much coldness in the World we still have human beings that care and serve with respect and dignity. Also my husband felt his love and care for the animals and how he showed Matcha who was in such a fragile state so much love and gentleness.
I was not there because I was working but my husband informed me every step of the way and even though I did not meet the doctor or staff I was so happy that we came to the right place because when you love your fur baby you want those that are touching them to love and respect them too. This is just a review to say thank you to the clinic, the staff and for the wonderful Doctor Morris. We would not hesitate to return. Beautiful people.
Emergency care is always expensive but we had a coupon that saved 50 percent off the emergency exam which was highly valuable for us and appreciated.

This was the most disappointing trip of my life… We came in with our dog straining and peeing straight blood. We drove over an hour to get there, and then we sat for almost EIGHT hours. After the first few hours, we thought nothing of it, as it is the day after Christmas… Until everybody that came in after us was already seen and we were still sitting. We understand critical patients needing to be seen first but when we asked how much longer, they said one ahead of us. Then they just kept adding more people ahead of us. It literally wasn’t going to stop happening, is basically what the lady at the front desk told us. We then asked if there was ANY possible way we could be seen and leave. Of course they said no, then they told us that we should’ve just gone to an urgent care in the first place, kind of like we were dumb. Which we called multiple urgent cares who told us that they would have sent us to the emergency vet anyways, due to the amount of blood and how it was happening every time. Also as we were about to leave, they finally decided to say, “he just has a UTI, he will be okay through the night.” As if none of them knew how long we were there.
The whole point of me saying this is that I do NOT recommend going here, unless you want to waste your day away.

My dog was referred to the neurologist by our regular vet to care for his seizures in 2024. I was told to reported via email any seizure activity. For awhile the care received was great. In May 2025 I was told the neurologist would be on leave until November with no back up and emails would not be reviewed and to find another specialist. They also could no longer refill prescriptions. This was a planned leave - so the practice could have put a plan in place for care and/or referrals. This was no fault of the neurologist. My dog’s regular vet took over care for his seizures. Last night (Dec 2025) my dog had a much bigger seizure than usual, regular vet was closed, and when I called the VCA Specialty to see if we should come into the ER - I was told they were at capacity and couldn’t help me, the ER they referred me to another ER who also could not help because they did not have a specialist and referred me to Piper Memorial. VCA specialty is not reliable to their patients and left us without care on more than one occasion now. My advice is to not even bother with this practice and go to/call Piper or Gaurdian in Brewster, NY for ER and specialty care.

I had to take my cat Lolly in today due to an abdomen injury. We unfortunately had to make the incredibly painful and difficult decision to put her to sleep. The care we received went above and beyond what we expected, from the receptionists to the vet and vet techs everyone we interacted with was so helpful, kind, and compassionate. They made this devastating situation go as smoothly as something like this can possibly go. I want to thank the entire staff for the care they showed Lolly, myself, and my family today. Their compassion means the world to us and if she had to spend her last moments with my boyfriend and I in a vet’s office I’m glad we chose this one and she was in their kind and capable hands.

I am not one to write reviews but I was extremely disturbed, disappointed, and devastated over my recent experience at VCA in West Hartford. As a Physician taking care of sick hospital patients, I wouldn’t expect to discharge a patient, only for them to die 3 days later, but that is exactly what happened to my dear Nutella. She was diagnosed with diabetes a couple of weeks prior. Despite insulin injections, she remained in diabetic ketoacidosis and developed pancreatitis as well. I took her to VCA given no other animal hospitals in the area. She was very sick yet had to wait many hours to be seen. She was finally taken back and started on an insulin drip and IVFs. Anyone can tell you that a dog with blood sugar in the 500s and on fluids is going to need to pee frequently. She was taken out every 4 hours but this is not adequate for this condition. She was then started on antibiotics for a uti but we were never told. The communication was very poor. She was released two days later. When she came home, she was lethargic and not eating. She ultimately died 3 days later. I lost my dog of 12 years and feel that she suffered in her last week of life. They now send me the final bill to add insult to injury. This is not about the money but common decency. I will never get my Nutella back and am very saddened by the care and treatment she received. I should have taken her to Piper in Middletown but hindsight is 20/20. I would give zero stars if possible. If you care about your pet, I would avoid this animal hospital!
