We took our beloved Bruno in for an emergency visit late last Friday night (1/9). Kaige and Dr. Woyda took such good care of our sweet boy and helped us transfer him to CSU smoothly. We're so grateful for both of them and their love and care really left an impact on my husband and I. Thank you so much!

they were adamant that my cat stay in their nightmare of barking dogs to die in an agonizing hellscape scented of antiseptic and a poorly ventilated bathroom, that he couldn't make the 10 minute drive home without more medication. they never gave him more medication though. They wouldn't have even taken the cone off his face in his last minutes if I didn't ask.
The least they could do is dedicate a room separate from all the others to be a little more comforting and a lot more soundproof. rockwool is cheap and some of the best soundproofing material you can get. another person in the waiting room used the restroom and despite all the barking dogs in the back, every sound they made was audible to the entire waiting room.
they charge an arm and a leg for everything. looking at the invoice IV setup alone was $312. a simple Google search says it should be about half of that. Running a Heska comprehensive panel with CBC typically costs the pet owner $100-$200. my bill says you charged me $215 for the panel recheck but $418 for the initial panel. I'm going to keep looking into this...
WOW $103 for a blood pressure test? a google search indicates that even an advanced Doppler test should cost around $55.
for that money I shouldn't have had such a traumatic experience. there's not a single thing they could have done worse.

I want to be reasonable, but that's pretty hard considering the situation I'm in
at the point I knew my best friend and brother was going to die I asked if it could be feasible to take him home and have another service put him down in comfort. I think this is a question that gets asked commonly because they had a response prepared, no thought required before telling me his pain meds are gonna wear off or whatever.
we live 15 minutes away. he was put down two hours later, no additional medication was delivered in that time. there's no reason I shouldn't have been able to walk out with him and meet a vet at my house to kill my best friend. instead, I held him and they delivered the medicine when I told them to.
it is not instant. you don't press the sedative button and the cat passes out at light speed. it's quick, but it takes a second, and it's the most memorable second of my life.
they charged me $4,000 in two days to kill my cat, and their walls are so paper thin that a dog barked in the next room while they were sedating him. he was terrified by that dog, and that terror was the last thing he felt as he died.i know this because he was my brother, I could talk to him and understand him better than I can talk to and understand people. now he's gone and the last things he felt were terror, confusion and pain.
if I had not listened to Dr. Mason and demanded that my cat stay medicated and stabilized while I arranged a euthanasia at home service, then his car ride home would have been a fraction of the time I spent holding him in the office, but then he would have been multiple orders of magnitude more comfortable. the idea of pain medication wearing off was a sellable product to someone stuck in their decision making though. it's just that if you guys are gonna keep insisting on collecting that euthanasia fee then could you maybe make the slightest effort towards making it worth it? like maybe put literally anything in your walls and ceilings? are you guys absolutely certain that my cat would have suffered if he wasn't in close proximity to medication you didn't give him anyway?
and after Dr. Mason was done sedating my cat, the syringe with whatever lethal drug they use... for some reason... somehow... it sprayed on my face. my tears flowing heavily, I asked if that's normal and he says "no, it's not bad, he just got an extra dose, wipe it off your face." Dude you just killed my only friend and sprayed your leftover ammo on my face like a money shot... for the kind of money he's making he can afford to be better than that.
and I don't know what to call this person respectfully- not Dr. Mason but the young woman working with him. I don't know what the term is, but to me she seemed to kinda fill the role of a nurse in a veterinary setting and she's generally fine at her job and stuff but you guys need to know that she needs more time before she starts dealing with death. she was constantly laughing, and I know it was nervous laughter, but if you can't maintain a professional demeanor then maybe this isn't the job for you.
I'm gonna remember the laughter that came with the cremation paperwork. you can't undo that.
I want to give Dr. Mason credit for giving me honest facts and being real with me right from the get go. He was a good doctor medically, but the argument he made against at-home euthanasia was not a good argument. he argued to make sure my cat would die miserable without a chance at comfort. they weren't gonna re-use his IV line, they never took it out, they could have left it in him and rushed him to my house to die in my arms in our bed, but that effort was never considered an option by them.
there are very few things in this world I'm certain of, but I'm certain that I failed my best friend by letting him die in agony. and I failed him after a lifetime of love, by putting him in a scary and confusing place and keeping him there when he couldn't be saved.
I'll regret going to VCA forever. they are in it for the money and have no compassion or empathy
