We have been going to VCA for 14 years and have enjoyed every experience, until today. This was our first time with Dr. Hiebert, and will be our last. At first, he felt warm and kind. He started to ask questions about the health of our dog, specifically her flea medication. At THEIR recommendation, she’s on Bravecto and we have it shipped to us every 12 weeks. He asked how often we give it to her and we said every 3 months and he asked what it says on the label. We didn’t know. He then said it’s 12 weeks, not three months and we are essentially risking her for a week and a half with no flea medication. The issue is semantics. We have a reminder for every 12 weeks. We say 3 months. But it was the framing of the question and his delivery that was off putting. Then it came to her vaccinations and he said we haven’t had her leptospirosis vaccine. This has been discussed with previous vets and at THEIR recommendation she doesn’t need it because she doesn’t go to the dog park, daycare, or boarding facility. We never declined the vaccine. They told us she didn’t need it. When I shared that with him he said he’s never heard of that for being a reason not to get it. Then he started checking her teeth and said “I can tell you brush her teeth regularly” and we said we don’t. He laughed and said “I know. I can tell how she’s reacting to my fingers in her mouth.” She was squirming. Not snarling. Not growling. Not barking. Squirming. I told him it’s strange because she never had a problem with the other vets putting their fingers in her mouth. I didn’t appreciate the passive aggressive bitchiness. The vet tech came back in and said he’s recommending the leptospirosis vaccine and proceeded to say it’s recommended for dogs that go to the dog park. So I said the other vets told us since she doesn’t go to the dog park it wasn’t necessary but this vet says he’s never heard of that. She looked right at us and said “I’ve always been told it’s not necessary in your case but he’s telling me it’s now a ‘core’ vaccine.” As we are waiting for her to finish her shots, he comes out and gives us a paper that explains the importance of the vaccine and says “I just ran it through AI with no leading questions.” If you have to say “no leading questions”, you prompted it to give a leading answer. But in his own print out it literally says we don’t need it. Overall it felt like a sleazy car salesman. Had he not started off the conversation trying to make us look like morons for saying 3 months instead of 12 weeks, I would have absolutely gotten the vaccine without questions. Because we trust doctors! But when he, his staff, and his print outs contradict each other, it feels off. We will continue to go to VCA but will refuse to see him again. Every other staff member is great. Like really great! But this guy needs better bedside manners. If we truly need the vaccine we will get it-but his printouts and every annual visit prior has told us it’s not necessary. I don’t like being made to feel like I’ve failed as a pet parent when we have only done what they’ve instructed us to do. PS-we have pet insurance that covers vaccines so it’s not about the money.
