One word: incompetent. Rude and insensitive. I don’t like repeating myself, yet I had to do it several times before I could even speak with an attorney. The person taking my information was incredibly incompetent.

Lauren Pitman's response to the review below spoke of compassion. I didn't get any toward me in my sorrow about the death of my sister. None! She also spoke of non-existent threats and poor behavior. My “poor behavior” consisted of asking questions, which, if truthfully answered, would make her and her staff look bad. As for rules of professional conduct, that is just her excuse for laziness.
--------------------------
Lauren Pitman was the attorney handling the estate of my sister, Nancy Fairbairn. The beneficiaries were several charitable organizations. I had no quarrel about money, but as an interested party and the only sibling of the deceased I had questions. I found Ms. Pitman and her staff minimally cooperative. They were curt and insensitive to my feelings at a time of deep emotional pain.
The greatest reason for my anger against Ms. Pitman was her refusal to allow her staff to talk to me about what they saw when they went into my sister's house. A brief telephone conversation would have gone a long way in helping me find closure, but I was denied this small courtesy. It would have cost virtually nothing. In spite of my many pleas, no reason was ever given.
Ms. Pitman refused to give me my sister's ashes. She said there is a document my sister left stipulating what was to be done with them, but my request for a copy was ignored. I'm left wondering if the real reason was that it was just too much trouble to ship them.
As for Ms. Pitman's legal work, I never actually talked to her. In response to my questions, she wrote two letters, both of which made false statements about me. She complained that responding to me wasted her time, so I offered to pay her for her time. She declined my offer, but she still complained, saying that I was causing loss to the beneficiaries. That means she billed the estate so heavily for responding to me that I am to blame for reducing what they would otherwise get. She controls how much she charges for her services, not me. Nonetheless, I certainly do not want to be the cause of any loss to the charitable organizations. I have asked Ms. Pitman to be sure the final accounting breaks out what she charged for what was specifically done for me. I want to compensate the organizations. Pending the final accounting, I have already given $5,000 to the Union Gospel Mission of Olympia and another $5,000 to the Progressive Animal Welfare Society. I do not know if $10,000 will cover what Ms. Pitman took from the estate because of me. All she personally did was write two short letters.

Katharine Bauer has never led me or my mother wrong. I would trust her opinion over all the other lawyers I have dealt with over the years.
