BEWARE: you may save a lot & get a low rate at first, but your loyalty means nothing and you will over time be completely taken advantage of without your knowing. Please read if you are thinking of going with Owen O’Malley / Allstate…
My story is likely nothing new. I switched to Allstate in 2017 when Royce Williams was still the agent representing me. I was quoted a very low rate with great coverage for bundling home and auto, etc. Just after COVID-19, when I noticed my insurance going up significantly every year, I started calling Owen’s office before every renewal period to see how I could amend my coverage to save. The first thing I noticed is they will lower your deductible every year without your initiation in order to drive up your premiums. For example, I had found my home insurance deductible had been lowered all the way down to $500… pretty insane to think anyone would file an insurance claim on a house for something they could only pay $500 for.
Each time I called, we would run down every single item that could be amended on my coverage to save as much as possible. We would knock $50-100 off per year on both home/auto, which I unknowingly thought was as good as it got.
This year, when talking to family about insurance premiums, they about had a stroke when they heard my car insurance (for a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek) was renewing at $800 for the upcoming 6-month period, meaning that I was to be paying $1,600 per year. I called Zander and overnight was quoted with a BETTER plan elsewhere for almost HALF of that ($900 per YEAR), and my home insurance went from $2,400 to $1,500 annually. That is $1,800 per year in savings. $1,800 LESS !!! I switched that day.
But it gets better… when I called Allstate to cancel my service, their agent, Tyler, said “they had some more competitive rates they could send me.” I had already switched at this point, but curiosity led me to see what they had. WELL, magically, they could get my same coverage down to $650 per 6 months for auto and $1,500 for home insurance. That was $1,100 less than I was currently paying with them per year. Are you kidding me? Because I decided to leave, you’ll cut my premiums by over $1,000 a year? When I confronted Tyler, the agent, on the phone, he shamefully admitted, “we wish we could offer more competitive rates to our longtime customers, but sadly the loyalty is not rewarded as it should be and those discounted rates are usually just available for new customers.” This tells me all I need to know about Allstate & Owen O’Malley’s office.
The moral of all this:
SHOP INSURANCE COMPANIES EVERY YEAR, DO NOT GO THROUGH AN ALLSTATE AGENT, & DEFINITELY DO NOT STICK WITH THEM FOR CONVENIENCE … YOU WILL GET RIPPED OFF ! Call Zander and they will shop for you every year to avoid this happening, and you do not have to pay an agent.
I am trying not to take it personally how much I was (likely) blindly ripped off for years by Allstate, despite trying everything in my power to stay loyal and check my coverages each year. I could have bought another car for how much I overpaid. I would really like an explanation from Owen himself on how he can do this to loyal customers and take advantage of so many people who think they are doing the right thing? I sure wouldn’t be able to sleep at night. Especially in a world where insurance already costs far too much. Thanks for reading this far if any of you have… I am trying to save you the money I lost.
