Gather round, friends, and hear my tale of woe.
A few weeks ago, I was hit by another driver going 15+ MPH over the limit in a residential neighborhood. Thankfully no one was hurt, but both cars are likely totaled. The other driver immediately took responsibility, stated they were speeding, and the police report clearly documented they were traveling over 40MPH in a 25MPH zone. They received a careless driving ticket, and both cars were towed. So far, so good.
I filed a claim with Geico that evening, uploading photos and the police report. The next day, I found a voicemail from a Geico agent - let’s call him “Amador” - even though my phone hadn’t rung. He said to call him back, but the number he gave routed me to Geico’s general line. After 30 minutes navigating menus and waiting on hold, I was told Amador was “outside business hours” and could not be contacted directly.
The next morning: another voicemail, no missed call. Again, a long hold with Geico, and again, “it was outside Amador's business hours.” Eventually I reached someone in his office who said Amador had been trying to reach me. I asked them to note in my file that I needed contact via email or text since the calls weren’t coming through. I gave a recorded statement and triple-checked that nothing on my phone was blocking their number.
The next day: another voicemail without my phone ringing. Then another. I spent 30 minutes on hold with the general Geico line, and when I finally reached someone in Amador’s office, they told me Geico was holding me 50% at fault because “neither driver saw the other.” I pointed to the police report showing the other driver speeding and admitting fault. The agent reviewed it and said they agreed and would speak to a manager to adjust the determination. I again begged them to change how they contacted me.
Meanwhile, the other driver’s insurance successfully contacted me and confirmed I was 0% at fault and began processing things on their end. Geico did not contact me for a week.
Then I received a letter: Geico finalized my claim and still held me 50% at fault.
On Monday, I finally reached Amador for the first time. He said he heard we "bumped into each other" and repeated the same explanation: “neither of you saw each other.” I asked him to read the police report. He read it aloud: the other driver was speeding at 40+ MPH and hit me. Then he said he couldn’t determine fault because the report “didn’t say which driver was D1 or D2.” (It does.) Instead of checking, the conclusion seemed to be: “When in doubt, split the blame.”
He said he’d speak with a supervisor. A couple of hours later, my phone rang—an actual ringing call—from Amador. I had not touched my spam settings. The only logical conclusion: he had not been calling me before. He had been dropping voicemails directly, using a system that lets someone leave a voicemail without calling. Rarely used, but it exists.
So let's recap. My agent was unable to be reached, was unwilling to put forth anything more than the minimum effort to reach me, assigned fault assigned without reviewing the claim, and I received contradictory information while the other insurance company handled things better. I can’t say I’m impressed.
That said… Geico is still cheaper than anyone else I’ve found.
2 stars.
