I had a pleasant experience renewing car insurance with Ella. She was very friendly, competent and helpful. The manager, Hamed, was kind and helpful, too.

I recently got my Amateur Radio license and can now have my call sign on my license plates. ICBC outlines the process for ordering these plates on their website. I downloaded, filled out and brought these forms to the autoplan counter at LD Lonsdale. The process is the same as getting vanity plates, but with no application fee. The two, unoccupied agents at the desk listened to my request then made confused faces, and did not look at the forms I handed them (page 2 had instructions on the process). They asked me “you have to order the plates?” When I said “yes” they looked at each other and then said they “we have never done this before. We don’t want to mess up” and proceeded to turn me away. They first told me to come back the next day after 12:30 when their manager would be onsite. When I said I work during the day, they began trying to look up other brokers I could go to. I stopped them as it was 8pm and I knew there were none around at that time. That energy could have been put into reading the instructions on ICBC’s website, or the forms I had handed them. They preferred to turn me away and resume their conversation. I can understand never having had to handle a request for Ham plates, but it is the same process as vanity plates - which is more common. They would have known this if they had actually looked at the forms I handed them. Their decision to turn me away, claiming lack of knowledge, speaks to poor training on Autoplan’s part, poor knowledge of how to get information, and a lack of desire to do a new thing. Worse, I can’t help wondering if the lack of desire to figure it out might have something to do with the fact that there was no sales commission involved in the transaction. Needless to say, I’ll be going elsewhere to order my plates and letting ICBC know this location turns Ham plate requests away. I’ll be taking my eventual insurance renewal to a non-LD broker.
